I’m still a bit puzzled by the Aussie’s desire to increase their naval capabilities.

Are they going to torpedo refugee ships coming from Sulawesi?

I can understand why we, the US, want to sell them goods.

First, to get more money into our defense industry, and keep the submarine vendors in the black.

Secondly, we think Australia will always be our ally so if something stirs up with some major power we can call on them to help.

But if I were an Australian I’d be asking some hard questions right now, such as, what is really the big picture here? Why are we in an arms race? And, if we’re so small that we can’t build all the stuff ourselves, do we really want to take on the burden of the life-cycle of a naval vessel (which goes on for decades) for which we depend upon foreign suppliers?
