I haven’t heard of that. Are they trying to cut down on unnecessary calls? i hear that’s a real burden at times.

I believe that’s the rationale, yes.

But it’s going about it the wrong way, and it will get people killed.

It’s not a fine for frivolously calling 911, it’s a per-usage fee for people who don’t subscribe.

So let’s say you think you’re having a heart attack, but you know calling 911 will cost you $350 you don’t have, on top of whatever money you don’t have for the actual medical treatment, because you don’t have insurance. So you tell yourself, “Ah, it’s just that acid reflux again”, and drop dead half an hour later.

As the old, unfunny joke goes, it’s no crime to be poor, but it might as well be.
