In my book, there are a lot more partisans than just two. Since the topic has turned to primarily social conservatism, that way of life is concerned with minting vulnerable children into conformist adults. If the concept of “choice” enters the picture, it’s along the lines of, these are the choices and you better make the choice we approve of, and this “choice”, only.

Witness their regressive idea of “lifestyle choices” and homosexuality, or “choosing” any other religious lifestyle than some conservative form of Christianity.

The very idea of “choice” is extremely threatening to authoritarians and totalitarians, and I put socons squarely in the former category. That’s why they must back up their “choice” by threats of force and violence. Otherwise, what normal people would choose it in any large numbers?

You are talking about extremists and projecting that onto a rather populace at large. I think you are gravely mistaken. Personal experiences, I guess…
