U.N.: North Korea Human Rights Violations Condemned
UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution Monday denouncing widespread human rights violations in North Korea ranging from public executions to severe restrictions on freedom of expression, religion and assembly.
The 193-member world body scheduled the vote before the announcement late Sunday that North Korea leader Kim Jong Il had died.
The nonbinding resolution strongly urges the government in Pyongyang to immediately put an end to the “systematic, widespread and grave violations of human rights.”
