They did the same with Kerry. To hear people talk about him now you’d think he must have murdered their best friend or something.

And why? Why still such an intensity of hatred for a failed POTUS candidate who even his own party was lukewarm about?

My theory is that it’s the culmination of 90’s hate radio and the mainstreaming of right wing eliminationist rhetoric about liberals.

Every enemy is always the worst enemy ever; nothing other than total annihilation can ever be enough. (This is also exactly what Richard Hofstader says in The Paranoid Style in American Politics too— not coincidentally, the Birchers are back now too.)

It’s the Vietnam issue they have with Kerry.

Oddly enough, Gore volunteered and served in Vietnam, even though he was against the war, because if he went, it would be one less man to be drafted. You don’t hear the Right talk about that at all.
