I’m not a big Dunn supporter, and I think she was dumb to call Mao one of ther favorite political philosophers without expecting some reaction. However, one of Goldwater’s campaign advisors also quoted Mao as a political philosopher, so I think some (most?) of the outrage over this is manufactured.
Quoting Mao isn’t the problem. I quote Mao, I quote Deng Xiaoping, et al.
She quoted Mao as part of a larger story about his struggle to consolidate his control over mainland China during the civil war against his former comrade Chiang Kai-shek. To encourage high schoolers to persevere.
Tone-deaf and dumb doesn’t begin to describe it.
