I was shocked recently when I talked with a coworker. He was a young spanish guy. I mentioned buying some stock when the market was down, and his reply was, “Oh, I don’t do stocks, that’s for white people!”

I was, frankly, surprised at that. Most of mainstream, middle-class America is in the market through 401k and IRA’s with their employer. Is the market really perceived as some kind of elite thing?

I think it’s entirely possible depending on how young he is that he doesn’t realise that a 401K and/or an IRA means he is de facto in the market.
