I’ve never taught Title I classes, or even any at-risk students, but I’ve experienced many of those same triumphs and frustrations that writer has. Education of young people is much, much more than test scores and pushing “product” out the door. It’s an intense person-to-person interaction, with one teacher interacting with 30 students or more in each class, five classes a day, five days a week. And if you do it the way it should be done, it’s fucking exhausting work. You come home drained each day, with a stack of homework to grade and the next day’s lessons to plan, and maybe a set of phone calls to make.

America’s corporate education reformers have no fucking clue what they’re talking about. And Michelle Rhee should be ashamed, as a former classroom teacher herself, to be part of that “reform” movement — not to mention that whole Washington, DC, testing scandal under her watch.
