As we’ve discussed with obstruction of justice, there are things that while otherwise legal, done in certain contexts become illegal. It’s perfectly legal and within the powers of the president to fire the FBI director, it is not legal or within his powers to do so in order to shut down an investigation into him/his campaign/his family/his business dealings. That dinner might have been perfectly legal, but it now falls under the cloud of potential bribery/corruption and needs to be investigated.
