Apparently between the wars, companies started using Glaxolide, a synthetic musk molecule, as a fragrance for laundry detergent. As a result, generations of Americans have developed a deep belief that the smell of synthetic musk is the smell of ‘clean’. We will, as a result, buy perfumes loaded with this stuff in huge quantities.
