Tech Note: Linkage Mutating into Diaries

Technology • Views: 3,456

Yeesh. When you’re moving text around among browsers and Javascript and PHP and MySQL, and when that text is coming from outside sources (copied and pasted from web pages by LGF users), sometimes the character encoding and translation issues can become … intense. Yes, I’m coding away at LGF Linkage again, and I think I finally have the worst of the character encoding issues whipped, but good.

Meanwhile, LGF Linkage is slowly morphing into a more free-form blog/diary system for LGF users. Instead of making each post be tied to just one link, similar to Digg or Reddit, each registered LGF user will now get his/her/its own blog, or diary, or whatever you want to call it. The URL field in the bookmarklet is now gone; instead, when you click the bookmarklet while viewing a web page, the URL of the page is inserted into the description field as an HTML link, followed by any text you selected. You can edit any of these fields, of course.

Coming next: you’ll be able to put tags on your posts, to further help in categorizing and searching, similar to the tags you see at the bottom of each LGF front page article.

“LGF Linkage” will need a new name, since it’s not so focused on single links, and I’m leaning toward “LGF Pages.”

IMHO - infolinks is NOT a positive development to this website.

“LGF Linkage” will need a new name, since it’s not so focused on single links, and I’m leaning toward “LGF Diaries” since it’s a term in fairly common usage and seems to fit the system.

I think LGF Linkage needs a unique name.

why? sure I’ve seen some links I don’t have much use for and some that have been downdinged by Charles. But that seems to be the general attitude on Charles’ site — scroll past what you don’t want to read and engage when you want to. I’ll join you in lobbying Charles to develop a bozo filter as his next project if you’d like. 8-)

Agreed. The Dkos terminology of “diaries” has always bugged me. When I think of diaries I think of someones boring self indulgent musings on who they have a crush on or where their dream vacation is going to be.

“Infolinks” refers to the ads in the form of underlined words on the page that show a link to an ad when you mouseover them. IIRC, they’ve been here longer than vinnievin, but what do I know.

Bennett..

That man was not any type of RINO. The party delegates, some of whom openly described themselves as “ultraconservative”, were unwilling to sanction any compromise or deviation at all. They want a right-wing robot and the entire Republican party will pay the price. This will pull the GOP’s Senate delegation to the right when it should move to towards the center. Bad, stupid, sick.

From EJ Dionne’s column today on the British elections:

Cameron’s genius was to accept that the future of conservatism lies in winning over moderately progressive voters in the classes doing reasonably well in this new economic world. In his post-election statement offering to form a governing alliance with the Liberal Democrats, he began by declaring victory for “a new, modern Conservative Party,” a socially concerned, open-minded and tolerant band you don’t have to be ashamed of supporting.

Cameron understands — as many Republicans in the United States seem not to — that conservatism needs to sand off its rough edges and present itself as a stabilizing, unifying force.

When I post them with the bookmarklet (which is the only way I’ve done it since it’s been available) the link is automagically there at the top of the text, as seen in Bobibutu’s that comes between your second and third links. They don’t all look like that, so there are other ways.

You can still post links as spinoff links for each LGF article, or through the “top-rated linkage” form, and if you post that way the URL is still required.

I went to my niece’s first communion today…pleasant service. Catholic mass has changed over the years…it’s gotten a lot more ‘jesusy’ than it used to be…almost evangelical in nature. I don’t remember it being like that growing up. Mass used to be so simple…Audience participation was kept to a simple ‘Amen’ or ‘Lord hear our prayer’ but now everything has to be sung three times and there’s lots of raising hands in the air…kind of freaky, to be quite honest.

Yes, if you post with the bookmarklet, the title becomes a link to the LGF page where people can comment on it.

If you post through the form in the “top-rated linkage” section at the top of the main page, though, the URL is a direct link to the article.

If these are going to be more like blog posts, with comments, etc., the link should go to the page where people can comment.

Very interesting. The Fox News guy says “We have a passage in the Constitution such as: “they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.” That’s from the Declaration of Independence. Which I see he pointed out.

it reads like that one onion article about the tea party guy

I went to my niece’s first communion today…pleasant service. Catholic mass has changed over the years…it’s gotten a lot more ‘jesusy’ than it used to be…almost evangelical in nature. I don’t remember it being like that growing up. Mass used to be so simple…Audience participation was kept to a simple ‘Amen’ or ‘Lord hear our prayer’ but now everything has to be sung three times and there’s lots of raising hands in the air…kind of freaky, to be quite honest.

Me no like much.
I prefer the quieter, simpler Mass, myself.

All the things I used to like about the Catholic church are gone. Classic hymns, choirs, a simple organ, altar boys with throat slashers/catch trays during communion…they don’t even ring the bells when the priest holds up the chalice anymore.

I feel the same way.
In small towns, you can still find an old priest who will have the bells rung at communion. The patens are no longer needed because people take communion in their own hands

When I was growing up, it was like a mortal sin to touch the communion host. I had one get stuck at the top of my mouth once, and reached in to pry it loose. I never confessed it; I was certain I would be ex-communicated or something. Can you picture the scandal - 7 year old is ex-communicated for touching the host!

The way LGF Linkage is morphing, it’s likely to become a separate app. What’s being created here, if I understand it, is a new kind of chat forum, but centered around links. Should that ever happen, it could be renamed. Anything selected now might not fit whatever it will become. I’m guessing that it’s destined to be the LGF Link Forum.

I did very briefly as a kid. In fact, I was fairly literal about my beliefs, since I took what those children’s Bible books said at face value. As far as I knew as a little girl, manna really did rain down from Heaven, Methuselah really did live to be almost 1000 years old, and the plagues of Egypt actually happened.

That didn’t last long. By the time I was in middle school, I’d pretty much outgrown the whole thing. I still went through the motions all the way through high school, even going through Confirmation, but by that point, I couldn’t believe in any of it any longer. It just didn’t make much sense to me. Still doesn’t, really.

re: #172 Lidane

After my confirmation, we went to dinner with two other families. The parents started talking about things like, “The bishop said we are to emulate Jesus, as he sat up there with his golden staff and fancy shoes—who does he think he is?” and it was all down hill from there…

I don’t even remember where we went after my Confirmation, or much about it at all. For that matter, there are only two things I remember from my First Communion — 1) having to settle for the girlie white and pink Bible study set I was given by my childhood parish instead of the much cooler looking black and gold set that the boys got, and 2) running out of the church as soon as the Mass was over and over to the playground to get on the monkey bars while still in my dress and veil. Plus, it had rained that morning, so there was mud everywhere. That photo is probably my favorite picture of me as a kid. Heh.

nope. the fact that i said i spoke with someone should mean nothing to you. it’s in no way proof of anything.

however, it would be passing strange if i suddenly told you that i didn’t believe this person existed anymore, after having had a business relationship. not that the person was a fraud or dishonest, but literally didn’t exist.

an odd development, wouldn’t you say…which is why i attempted to make a gentle remark about how well someone who ‘becomes’ an atheist really knew God…,

My dog is a huge fan of Webern and Stravinsky, and gets really annoyed when people refer to any music that’s played on string instruments as “classical”. My dog knows the difference between gothic, renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, and modern orchestral music, and deeply hates the fact that music appreciation classes are non-existent in current day public schools. Interestingly, he also likes Black Sabbath and Type O Negative, which he sometimes refers to as ‘heavy metal funeral dirges’.

Well, I might be projecting just a little.

Being tough or discipline will play a role. If the teacher or instructor says “get this assignment in when it’s do or else” typically the students are left with no choice but to put the nose to the grindstone. I had a tough physics teach in community college. Kind of took me aback at first but I eventually liked his style. Got an A in both Physics 101 and 102.

Outrageous outrage of the day….
Angry Journalists Refuse to Review Anti-Obama Book

One of the worst ways that the lack of ideological diversity in America’s newsrooms shows forth is in the media’s treatment of sensational accusations against the current president.

World Net Daily-affiliated author Aaron Klein recently discovered this when he sent his new book, “The Manchurian President,” to members of the media he hoped would review it. He got some very angry responses. Here are some of the more colorful ones:

“Never, ever contact me again,” wrote Time Magazine senior writer Jeffrey Kluger.

Newsweek deputy editor Rana Foroohar quipped,”This is sensational rubbish that is of no interest to any legitimate publication.”

“Absolute crap,” replied Evelyn Leopold, a Huffington Post contributor who served for 17 years as U.N. bureau chief for Reuters until recently.

Nancy Gibbs, editor-at-large for Newsweek, fired, “Remove me from your list.”

David Knowles, AOL’s political writer, responded, “seriously, get a life.”

Ben Wyskida, publicity director for The Nation, claimed Klein’s book is “so offensive” and “so far afield.”

not like a preamble. but, for example, an explicit direction to help a poor person that i intended to walk by? when i’ve already given a buck to two other people and was just going to do the same…an unreasonable, explicit urge to engage this specific person? that isn’t what I WANT…I just want to dig for some change or a dollar and keep walking…

like that.

the majority of things (vast majority) i hear clearly enough to know it’s Him are
1. help this specific person right now, whether or not it’s convenient, because I AM TELLING YOU TO.
2. ACEOFWHAT…you are being a hypocrite/tool/dishonest fool…stop it now.

and it’s not my conscience…i know what that sounds like. this is an interruption, with clarity.

Just as a thought experiment / point of conversation: Suppose that these thoughts, despite not seeming like what you consider to be your conscience, were conclusively shown to have emerged spontaneously from your brain. Suppose they came from the same place as your choice of what to have for lunch today. How, if at all, does this affect the way you think of your own mind, your place in the world, and your perception of the person you felt compelled to help?

Note: this is not a set-up for an argument; I am intensely interested in the answers.

There’s no need to be gentle. As an ex-Catholic myself up until I was about 14, this makes perfect sense, since I never had such sensations.

I am generally curious about qualia, and not just of the religious sort - people get get into trouble when describing the experience of parental love, trying certain drugs, or any number of sensations their interlocutors never felt. They are generally next to impossible to put into words - you always have to resort to analogies to transmit the general sensation.

Ahh, but can your dog differentiate between funeral metal and stoner metal?

My dog is vaguely aware that some people consider these to be distinct genres, but isn’t well-versed in the minutia of it all. Offhand, he figures funeral metal is generally melancholy (think Type O’s Haunted and White Slavery, or most of Chopin’s Nocturnes), but while he doesn’t exactly know what ‘stoner metal’ is, he figures it would be sort of psychedelic and ethereal. Kind of like Boards of Canada, except with 7-string guitars tuned down to C.

re: #172 Lidane

Until I was 11 or so, I fully intended to become a Lutheran minister. A blooming interest in science convinced me otherwise.

I don’t think Hot Air is concerned with accuracy. Purely red-meat for their readership. So if they read something by Ed Morrissey categorizing President Obama as being hard-Left no one will question him and only engage in greater outrage.

There are many European socialist parties that one would not categorize as being hard-Left. On the opposite end domestically I would not categorize the majority of the GOP as being hard-Right.

Gold will stop rising when things settle. And then will come the weeping and gnashing of teeth as people realize that nothing rises forever. The fun thing to do is to calculate the “gold crazy index”;
1.Figure out the normal percentage difference between gold and silver.
(Where silver is, indicates a true(-er) value. It is hard to figure because gold will tend to drag silver up with it, but the silver will not have the same degree of inflated fear-induced, excessive, over-value.
2. From the value of silver, extrapolate the what the value of gold would be if it was not being over-bought by fear-mongering exploiters and crazed survivalists.
3. The difference, expressed in percent, is the “gold crazy index”.

If you want to be a saner survivalist, invest in bulk silver coins, or better yet, pre-aluminum alloy true copper pennies.

Gold is going to tank bigger that California real estate.

The reason I ask is that at times there can be quite a few spin-offs (especially on the overnight thread), and it seems like a lengthy “LGF Pages” entry written in a diary form will quickly get pushed down the stack, so that fewer people will read it, and even fewer will comment.

1. Black Sabbath are British, hailing from Birmingham.
2. Black Sabbath is the first metal band, and their influence is felt more throughout the metal world than almost any other band. Yes, they built upon what came before them, as do all musical acts (ok just about every form of human endeavor, but I digress), but they are considered to be the first. C. None of his pastimes are even interesting. Apparently whatever noble family he hearkens from likes to touch art in museums, doesn’t put postage on his mail, found his birth in a Mayan prophecy, and buried a time capsule full of things that haven’t happened yet. That’s just being an asshole.

Gold will stop rising when things settle. And then will come the weeping and gnashing of teeth as people realize that nothing rises forever. The fun thing to do is to calculate the “gold crazy index”;

Watching Glenn Beck’s freakout if that happens would be another fun things:

Repost,

A note on energy of the future…

I know for a fact that there are numerous places where there are strong winds quite frequently and I have seen calculations that a county sized patch of land in the right place - if populated by wind farms, could power the entire US.

The issue is that yes the wind is intermittent so it would be a very good idea to not put all of the farms in one patch, and even more important, it is necessary to build a smart grid to carry that power across larger distances. However, this is not impossible to do and there is no reason we could not get a substantial amount of our power from wind in the future.

A home windmill is another thing that if everyone had one - with proper battery storage for when the wind was not blowing, would make a dramatic impact. In fact, a home in the right area with a combination of solar panels, wind and the right battery technology could easily be completely off grid.

However that is small scale. Full scale windfarms however actually have the power to supplement major cites. This is another one of those things that we should be rapidly deploying.

In the near future, if we did things properly, densely packed cites that run major city wide utilities and services would be primarily supplied by modern generation nuclear reactors. As you moved out into the suburbs, windfarms and solar become very attractive. Fossil fuel cars would be phased out and replaced by electric vehicles. The cities would need to develop plug in infrastructure for parked vehicles. Your home, supplemented by your own solar or wind would charge up your vehicle.

Now imagine if you will how much money you would save if you did not have to pay for gasoline?

Imagine how much money you would save if you did not have to pay for heating oil because you had an electric system in your home, that was supplemented by your own collection of energy.

Sure the capital investment up front might seem high, however, the switchover would quickly pay for itself and continue reaping profits - and then huge amounts of money could be used for other things than propping up hostile nations, or destroying our environment.

It is a win, win, win all the way around. It would be a win even if AGW were not an issue from both an economic and a security standpoint. It would be a win from a diplomatic standpoint because the real and only way to tell people like Saudi Arabia to join the civilized world is to take away their leverage.

And yet, because oil companies and coal companies have politicians on both sides of the aisle (but particularly GOP) completely bought and paid for, we don’t do it.

We must break the strangle hold that these vested interests have over us. The choices could not b more clear. Massive economic boom from domestic energy production or total collapse of our civilization and billions of deaths.
Are you really interested in destroying your nation and killing your children so that some oil tick can live better for a while?

Zeppelin have steadfastly refused this title.

My mistake, I was in such a hurry to make a comment about the use of ‘czeching’ instead of ‘checking’ in negativ’s comment before anyone else, I didn’t reflect long enough on Ozzy.

Zep refused to accept the label of a metal band because their music covered an extreme range of styles. However, the essence of a metal band was best exemplified by their first album.

Even wiki cites claims they were one of the first.

With their heavy, guitar-driven blues-rock sound, Led Zeppelin are regularly cited as one of the progenitors of heavy metal[2] and hard rock music.[3][4]

Led Zeppelin’s eponymous debut album was released on 12 January 1969, during their first North American tour. The album’s blend of blues, folk and eastern influences with distorted amplification made it one of the pivotal records in the creation of heavy metal music.[6] However, Plant has commented that it is unfair for people to typecast the band as heavy metal, since about a third of their music was acoustic.

Zep’s first album was released in ‘69, Sabbath’s in ‘70.

It’s a very difficult issue, because the lines are not fully drawn. I try to keep quotes as short as possible, while still providing the necessary context to illustrate whatever point I’m trying to make.

You never seem to copy excessively. The way I do it is to add my commentary after each paragraph I copy, so even if I grab 5 or 6 paragraphs, I’m never just saying: “Hey, here’s an article from the Times.” I assume that amounts to “fair use,” but one never really knows.

Leftists (like Obama) don’t want Iran to get nuclear weapons. Only they are not prepared to do anything effective to prevent that eventuality. Egro Obama and the left accept that eventuality.

While I agree that we ignore Iran’s nuclear ambitions at our peril, I and many others have been saying for a long time that the majority of our attention ought to be focused on Pakistan. It’s sickening to think how much safer the entire world would probably be if we had used in Afghanistan all the blood and treasure we pissed away in Iraq.

Sure, but I don’t expect he will do that. And neither does Iran leadership.

This isn’t like a war movie where President Obama can call in the USAF and have them bomb the nuclear facilities overnight and get rid of the potential threat in one fell swoop. All non-military attempts would have to be exhausted first before any military action were taken. Even if military action was taken there would be no guarantee that it would be effective. Tactical nuclear bunker busters would not be used at this point in time regardless of who is in the White House.

Well, anyone who likes to make a big deal of us being a Christian nation would certainly take it poorly.

I don’t like “Judeo-Christian” at all. It implies a participation and acknowledgement of Jewish tradition in the dominant religious mainstream that simply has never existed in the Western World. It’s a rewriting of Jewish history.

If Iran said they were an Judeo-Islamic country…well, they’d be lying.

Pakistan tests 2 missiles, wants nuke recognition

By MUNIR AHMED (AP) – 15 hours ago

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan successfully test-fired two ballistic missiles Saturday capable of carrying nuclear warheads, the military said, as the Islamic nation’s leader urged the world to recognize it as a legitimate nuclear power.

The Shaheen-1 missile has a range of about 400 miles (650 kilometers), while the second Ghaznavi missile could hit targets at a distance of 180 miles (290 kilometers), an army statement said. Both can carry conventional and nuclear warheads.

The Moebius Transformation, forms the backbone of many parts of advanced mathematics. It is relevant to General Relativity and Modular Forms. If you know Cabballah, the real stuff, there is a metaphor in it (when taken into conjunction with the view of a Riemann Sphere) of how to answer questions of how God can be everywhere and nowhere, infinite and one. again, it wouldn’t be proof to anyone but you. but you wouldn’t say that you stopped believing they existed. that’s why i find the language of this subject so interesting.

We know how those systems work, and are familiar enough with them that we can differentiate between a real person and a mechanically generated voice on the phone, and for emails, use other cues such as where the email is from, the subject matter, and whether the email as a response makes sense in the context of the email conversation.

The faith used to believe in a supernatural being is not the same as the faith used in communicate with other humans, or expecting a red light to eventually turn green. The first faith is self referential, while the second is better called trust.

This is a subject I’ve debated for a while, and find it quite interesting.

If we tried to overtly overthrow the Mullahs in Iran it would backfire. The same people that oppose the Mullahs in Iran would turn around and defend the sovereignty of Iran regardless. There are far too many people in control of the government of Iran to do so effectively. You can’t do it with “one clean shot.”

Gas embargo by whom? We don’t sell gasoline to Iran. China is their primary supplier. You think they even care about what will happen in the long term? They’re only concerned about selling gasoline. You won’t get that kind of cooperation from China. You also won’t get much cooperation from Russia who is another trade partner with Iran.

It doesn’t take a real deep reading of the texts to see that Christianity is basically a plagiarism of Judaism, and Islam is basically a plagiarism of Christianity and Judaism. As such, it’s not much of a stretch to include Islam if you’re already comfortable conflating Judaism and Christianity (‘Judeo-Christian’).

And Jesus is a central figure in Islamic eschatology, for that matter. He also has a second coming:

Jesus will descend at the point of a white arcade, east of Damascus, dressed in yellow robes – his head anointed. He will then join the Mahdi in his war against the Dajjal. Jesus, considered in Islam as a Muslim, will abide by the Islamic teachings. Eventually, Jesus will slay the Dajjal, and then everyone from the people of the book (ahl al-kitāb, referring to Jews and Christians) will believe in him. Thus, there will be one community, that of Islam.

After the death of the Mahdi, Jesus will assume leadership. This is a time associated in Islamic narrative with universal peace and justice. Islamic texts also allude to the appearance of Ya’juj and Ma’juj (known also as Gog and Magog), ancient tribes which will disperse and cause disturbance on earth. God, in response to Jesus’ prayers, will kill them by sending a type of worm in the napes of their necks. Jesus’ rule is said to be around forty years, after which he will die. Muslims will then perform the funeral prayer for him and then bury him in the city of Medina in a grave left vacant beside Muhammad, Abu Bakr, and Umar (companions of Muhammad and the first and second Muslim caliphs respectively).

When another panelist - Salman Rushdie - said that denier arguments were very much like creationist ones, Frum said “well, evolution isn’t an issue we’re being asked to spend trillions of dollars over”. When the show’s host brought up outright lies told by denier George Will (such as citing the “research” of a completely fictional study group), Frum pretty much said the reason conservatives did these things was because that oh-so-nasty Al Gore “exaggerated” about AGW’s effects.

In other words, tu quoque and concern-trolling wrapped up in a bow of flattened, freeze-dried fecal matter. I’m not normally a “yell at the TV” type, but it’s hard to hold back when faced with such intelligence-insulting idiocy.

re: #444 publicityStunted

I saw a discussion panel on TV last night, one of the participants being David maybe-he-has-a-spine-maybe-he-doesn’t Frum - he gave such a weasel-worded, concern-trollish response to a question on AGW that it made me wish you’d been on the panel to (rhetorically) smack him upside the head.

It is part of their mantra to reject the science. It has become their litmus test.

Deep Purple was AS popular as Black Sabbath. J.P. was more cultish.

Thanks for the info. I was going partially on my memory of them. They were the 3 bands I payed most attention to in the early ’70s. My first album was Led Zep1 in ‘69, followed by BS and DP. We used to get stoned on acid and listen to them, mostly to BS, but DP and LZ as well.

I still have vivid memories of playing football with a running shoe while listening to Iron Man.

This is a subject I’ve debated for a while, and find it quite interesting.

good. me too. so on that note, call me out if i make it less fun - such is not my intention.

i agree…faith A and faith B are not exactly the same. at least, not at first.

so then i tell you, as rationally as possible, that i have a relationship with God that began with faith but has become more akin to trust over time. i say that not because it’s proof of anything to you or anyone else (nor should it be), but because i’m quite curious as to what that sounds like to atheists. does it sound crazy? a little like religion or practice X? a lot like X? and if so, what is X?

Tea party wins victory in Utah as incumbent GOP senator loses bid for nomination

By Amy Gardner
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, May 9, 2010

The national “tea party” movement toppled its first incumbent Saturday as long-serving Sen. Robert F. Bennett was defeated at the Utah Republican Party’s nominating convention, the most powerful demonstration yet of the anti-Washington tide that is altering the nation’s political landscape.

“This is a symbol that the tea party movement and the broader limited-government agenda is huge,” said Brendan Steinhauser, grass-roots director for the national tea party organization FreedomWorks, which set up a booth at the convention to herald Bennett’s defeat. “It’s the center of American politics. It’s everything that we’ve been saying it is. It’s not just a protest movement; it’s a political force.”

Steinhauser said Bennett’s defeat represents a critical first win that will help build momentum in other contests across the nation. Next up is Kentucky, where tea party candidate Rand Paul is running hard in a GOP primary battle against Trey Grayson, the handpicked candidate of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Some tea party activists suggested they may seek to oust Utah’s other senator, Orrin G. Hatch (R), whose term expires in 2012.

Post to follow on Brendan Steinhauser…

Brendan Steinhauser

Brendan Steinhauser, a former student activist at the University of Texas, is the author of The Conservative Revolution: How to Win the Battle for College Campuses. The book is a guide for right-wing activists, and calls on them to “launch a conservative revolution on college campuses.”

An alum of the Young Conservatives of Texas, Steinhauser established a sister organisation to YCT, the Young Conservatives of California. These groups are known for their in-your-face style. They have put on events like affirmative action bake sales, professor watchlists, Straight Pride days, and Texas Independence Day celebrations. The groups also lobby the state legislatures of Texas and California.

Ryan Sorba, a controversial College Republican at California State University—San Bernardino, is the Chairman of YCC. Steinhauser has written on his blog about their antics on campuses, and published a piece on TownHall.com about Sorba’s attempt to establish a Christian club at CSUSB that discriminates against homosexuals and non-Christians.

According to his bio on TownHall.com and FreedomWorks.org, Steinhauser is affiliated with the Intercollegiate Studies Institute and the Leadership Institute. His website indicates that he teaches “grassroots methods” for LI throughout the country. Steinhauser also is affiliated with the right-wing Collegiate Network, funded by ISI. The CN pours money into conservative campus newspapers and journals such as the Dartmouth Review and UT-Austin’s Contumacy.

Because Islam doesn’t acknowledge the divinity of Christ. And because there was probably a greater Judaic influence in the Arabian peninsula during Mohammed’s lifetime.

On the first issue, it’s a rather well established heresy. Various forms of what is generally referred to as Arianism have been found throughout history. All sorts of deviant Christian churches, and psuedo-Christian churches reject that Christ is also God.

As for the second, there were Christian churches all over the near east, and indeed in Iraq and Syria, at the time of Mohammed.

Even the idea of forbidden food (e.g., pork) was a major controversy in the early church, and even today it crops up here and there.

To a hammer, every problem is a nail.

re: #454 b_sharp

Thanks for the info. I was going partially on my memory of them. They were the 3 bands I payed most attention to in the early ’70s. My first album was Led Zep1 in ‘69, followed by BS and DP. We used to get stoned on acid and listen to them, mostly to BS, but DP and LZ as well.

I still have vivid memories of playing football with a running shoe while listening to Iron Man.

hehe I also think the terminology is weird. Metal has different meaning today where there’s a million metal classifications. In the late 60s early 70s, it was just heavy, or called hard rock. Grand Funk who also had a platinum album in 1969 (1st or 2nd) was also considered heavy metal and certainly a lot different than Sabbath.

When you posted the wiki on L.Z., it mentioned what I was thinking of when you were talking about them. Blues. Sabbath wasn’t bluesy. ACDC (more the mid-70s) also had the blues foundation. Still does.

Of course, this leaves out the fact that Iran busily amped up their nuclear program during the Bush administration, perhaps encouraged by the possibilities of gaining new influence following the demolition of their longtime crosstown rival by the United States Armed forces.

good. me too. so on that note, call me out if i make it less fun - such is not my intention.

i agree…faith A and faith B are not exactly the same. at least, not at first.

so then i tell you, as rationally as possible, that i have a relationship with God that began with faith but has become more akin to trust over time. i say that not because it’s proof of anything to you or anyone else (nor should it be), but because i’m quite curious as to what that sounds like to atheists. does it sound crazy? a little like religion or practice X? a lot like X? and if so, what is X?

I have a father and 2 brothers who say the same thing as you so I’m not unfamiliar with it. I don’t assume insanity, but I do suspect modified brain chemistry, something I’ve lived with most of my life, although mine is somewhat different.

All of the feelings you have can be artificially induced by either drugs or electrical impulse. Biofeedback has also been successful in inducing similar feelings. Atheists tend to not trust, at first blush, what goes on in the brain, which is one reason we demand external replication and validation.

Most atheists I know are highly self reflective and spend a fair bit of time trying to understand what goes on in our own heads and how those processes affect our view of the external world. We also spend a great deal of time considering and deciding on our own set of values, morals and sense of purpose. This makes the idea of faith, in the religious sense, strange to us.

I’ve always thought Islam has more in common with Judaism than Christianity. First, we have a shared culture, aside from religion. Second, Mohammed is a prophet, not considered Lord.

I don’t know much about Islamic afterlife. I think the Persian Jews should relocated to Israel.

Ahh and some more questions, but then I must go…

Does any Jew associated with the GOP, realize that in a climate of white fear and victimization complexes, Jews always get targeted sooner or later?

Ever hear of Ron Paul or Pat Buchanan?

Do you really think that those who want to “perfect us” by taking away our Jewish identity are our friends?

Do you think that 3000 years of shouting for the need for social justice meant nothing to your ancestors?

Do you think that by allying with evil folks, full of baseless hatred, rage and ignorance does your fore bearers proud?

Do you even understand what the significance of Baseless Hatred is?

For those who like to argue that we Jews are somehow inherently smarter than others, I present GOP Jews as exhibit A that no, unfortunately we have some really dumb putzs to our “credit.”

re: #570 b_sharp

It’s not just strange to you. Faith is a strange thing, period.

Your paragraph about artificial inducement is interesting. Is it a poor analogy to say that a greater understanding of the mechanism is only that, as opposed to a commentary on who or what is inducing the impression?

If i heard God with my ears, understanding how the ears work or being able to induce auditory sensations in other manners wouldn’t prove or disprive what i said i heard, right?

Is that a proper analogy?

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Secretary Robert Barham announced that the shrimp season in the territorial seas of the central coast of Louisiana — from Four Bayou Pass to Freshwater Bayou — closes effective sunset, Saturday, May 8, 2010.

Effective with this action, all outside territorial waters from the Mississippi/Louisiana state line to Freshwater Bayou are closed to shrimp harvesting.

Barham also announced that LDWF will delay the opening of the inshore shrimp season in Zone 2 until further notice.

Barham also announced that the inshore waters of Zone 3, from the western shore of Vermilion Bay to the Louisiana/Texas state line opened at sunset, Saturday, May 8, 2010.

Barham has made these decisions based on the potential effects from the Gulf oil spill and under the authority granted by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission.

re: #620 Gus 802

How long can shrimp last frozen?

Here we go:

To freeze fresh shrimp, freeze shrimp raw, with shell on, and completely submerged in water! This prevents freezer burn and drying out, and retains flavor and texture. Use heavy-duty freezer bags or Tupperware or any container that will hold water without puncturing. Freeze in amounts that you plan to use for each meal. Raw headless shrimp in the shell maintain quality during freezing longer than frozen, cooked shrimp and are best if frozen at the peak of freshness. Frozen raw shrimp maintains quality for approximately 6-7 months though it can be kept longer, whereas home frozen cooked shrimp begin to lose quality after approximately one month.

re: #603 Aceofwhat?

It’s not just strange to you. Faith is a strange thing, period.

Your paragraph about artificial inducement is interesting. Is it a poor analogy to say that a greater understanding of the mechanism is only that, as opposed to a commentary on who or what is inducing the impression?

If i heard God with my ears, understanding how the ears work or being able to induce auditory sensations in other manners wouldn’t prove or disprive what i said i heard, right?

Is that a proper analogy?

Knowing that the brain can be fooled does not disprove anything by itself. It is only when taken in the context of other things that evidence can be taken in either direction. Despite the interesting conversation LVQ and I had, last night I believe, the onus is on believers to show what they experience isn’t something simpler, such as momentary electro-chemical changes. All it (artificial induction) does is remove the feelings you get from the pool of possible evidence for God. That argument is circular anyway.

That said, the ability to induce those feelings artificially does not disprove God as the inducer at other times.

I don’t know. Quite possibly.

Indeed. I wonder on that number, 20K. I think that was as of 2004 or thereabouts. Achmedineajad came into power at that time.

Maimonides is always a good one to study regarding our relation to the Islamic world, the good and the bad.

Yeah. The current numbers are largely guesswork.

No antibiotics, just a cold virus - but i had walking pneumonia earlier this year…after my kids infected me again. I’m tripping on Advil Cold/Sinus currently…the lack of sleep plus lack of appetite plus cold meds = it’s a miracle i haven’t accidentally flounced yet!

I’m an old-ish former Republican (still right-leaning) person, and I’m right there with ya.
Hope you feel better soon.

You do know that leaning right demands a brick wall (or some other rigid support) on that side to keep you from falling and hurting yourself, while the entire left side remains open and free to cavort in?

Oy, take care of your lungs!! Do you take Co-Q 10 or other supplements for energy? I know of a single mom who passed because of overwork while having walking pneumonia which turned into full blown pneumonia within 2 months.
I don’t mean to be alarmist. I just think as we age we have to worry more about our body’s ability to heal.

Indeed, the experience a believer feels (imho) is not evidence to anyone but the believer, and shouldn’t be used as such. The onus is on me to be critical of what i feel and think, lest i put the divine stamp on any random passing fancy and crown myself king of some small compound in the mountains with 18 wives and 4-5 increasingly disgruntled men…

The feelings I have ought to be removed from the ‘pool of evidence for God’ out of sheer logic. The only proof they provide is personal…to me…and even then, i only accept them as personal proof of a relationship because they are at once repeatable, comforting, and terribly out of character. It’s that last part which lets me know who’s on the mental phone…

I would say as a Christian that the depth and continuity of my faith proves that is true. Also, the continued healing and nourishment of my soul. : )

Heh, actually i had just put some extra screws into my diet…i haven’t been getting the best out of workouts lately and part of it has just been lazy nutrition. More antioxidant-laden fruit and veggies (kiwis, blueberries, broccoli), less lazy snacks, nightly gin&tonic rationed to weekends only. Then i land my butt in bed again. Damned if i do!

Apparently between the wars, companies started using Glaxolide, a synthetic musk molecule, as a fragrance for laundry detergent. As a result, generations of Americans have developed a deep belief that the smell of synthetic musk is the smell of ‘clean’. We will, as a result, buy perfumes loaded with this stuff in huge quantities.

Is that the reason behind the phenomenal success of “White Musk” by the Body Shop?

Here’s the latest hatchet job on Obama, filled with the kind of absurd smears that get people hurt.

You can read the first chapter online at Amazon. It’s basically just rehashed info from the campaign carried to the extreme of guilt by association; no matter how far removed the association actually is from Obama, its most unsavory aspects are directly attributed to him.

The authors of the book clearly have no shame, going so far as to label Obama a “Manchurian president,” as if her were a foreign interloper bent on bringing America to ruin. I’m afraid the authors and some of their teabag audience (which loves slobbering over this kind of raw red meat) actually may see political violence as a solution. It’s currently #11 at Amazon. Not a promising sign with respect to the right returning to reality.
