I think they just didn’t know how big a flake she is, and they were afraid to question her hard enough to find out. With good reason, mind you, for if they’d pushed hard enough to weed her out the story might well have leaked out to James Dobson and Co. that the McCain team was “rejecting a Good, Christian Conservative”. Had that happened, Dobson would have flounced from the campaign and urged his followers to do the same. The result would have been Game Over for the McCain campaign.

As an aside, even though the McCain team didn’t know it in August 2008, its worth remembering that by that time their campaign was doomed no matter what they did. The fall of Lehman Brothers ensured an Obama victory.
