My point is that Dunn’s quoting Mao in the way she did does not indicate her approval of everything about the man any more than Tricky Dicky actually shaking the man’s hand does.

Wonder what Mao thought about old Nixy, though?

What strikes me, though, is that that little piece of Chinese history is not commonly known in the West. Hell, very few Westerners know anything about Chinese history at all. It shows a level of familiarity with the subject that is unusual, to say the least, and her “take” on it shows a certain sympathy with Mao.

I mean - you wanna talk about perseverance? Same history, same personnel - Chiang leading his troops and government to safety on Formosa, overseeing one of hte largest maritime evacuations in Asian history, under fire the entire time, and while rescuing Chinese cultural relics, full sets of government records, and all the rest of it, and then going on to build a 1st world industrial nation on what had been an island of fishermen and tea farmers in less than 25 years? THAT’S PERSEVERANCE!
