Ok as was told to me the story behind the medal is as follows:

My grandfather served in the Navy. At some point they had some German POWs aboard ship. At some point, one of them asked my grandfather if he could have some chocolate. My grandfather made a deal with the German that he could have some chocolate if he surrendered the medal. The German agreed and my grandfather, having little love for Germans, proceeded to bring the soldier some extremely bitter bakers chocolate in exchange for the medal.

The medal is special to me because there weren’t that many awarded and they were awarded over 80 years ago. Therefore there aren’t that many left around. I don’t see it as glorifying Nazis, I just see it as a really cool and unique war relic.

Truth be told though, it probably holds strong significance to me not so much because of what it is, but because of the connection it has to my grandfather.

I consider it “priceless” not because I think it has a high monetary value, but because I know if it ever got lost or destroyed it would be irreplaceable.
