Leyte Gulf is a great battle to read about. While in many ways the IJN was doomed from the start, they came fairly close to inflicting a serious defeat on the US. America was saved thousands of casualties by Admiral Kurita’s bungling.

You should pick up “The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors”. Just a remarkable story of selfless bravery.
