Glenn Beck: 'The Government is the Devil'

Not trying to post a stealth reply but I just got home to post again… One more editorial from me on the LDS Church and politics. Ezra Taft Benson was active politically and a staunch anti-communist in the 50s and 60s. When he was called to lead the Church he left his politics out of his ecclesiastical work.

Most Mormons leave their political views at the door of the chapel and we are very big on individual choice and agency. Given our history and emphasis on shared resources and consecration it may seem strange that communism is not popular among our members, however the big distinction is the difference between being compelled to share (big government) and sharing voluntarily (private charity). Again it seems Glenn Beck has taken some cues from our beliefs about agency and individual choice but saying the Government is the Devil isn’t central to our beliefs. In fact another common Mormon belief is that we sustain and support the government of our home countries (render unto Caesar…)
