I was kind of kidding but it was my understanding that FR was always pretty nuts but what was fringe right when I first really started following the news in the 90’s become more mainstream right wing now. It downright saddens me in a way that guys like Goldwater, Ford, Nixon, Bush I, and even Reagan would be too liberal not only economically but socially for today’s GOP. Whilst the Democrats became more progressive on social matters at the 60’s went on, what I think we’ve witnessed is a reversal where the GOP grew more reactionary on social issues. Hell, Mitt Romney accused POTUS of forcing gay marriage on America. I seen an ad from Mitt when he ran against Ted Kennedy when he tried to out-left TK on that issue and distance himself from the social conservatism that dominated the party in the 80’s as a whole. It’s honestly kind of sad.

The modern variant of “conservatism” that we see on display nowadays is nothing more than a stridently reactionary ideology.
