I agree he wasn’t stupid and that his speech gave that illusion. This, combined with his being the son of a recent president, added to the theme that he was a puppet. Maybe not literally in most of the left’s minds, but in the sense that he just ambled along, became president by virtue of family connections and was led by the nose by stronger personalities.
