Too gripes, 64 bit isn’t automatically enabled, you have to edit com.apple.Boot.plist file and the SATA II firmware to allow 3GBit SATA wasn’t fixed, it’s still stuck at 1.5GBit.

I think the SATA problem is with the MacBooks. My MacPro shows 3GBit. Regarding the 32bit kernel, it’s not necessary to run 64bit applications. Here’s an interesting discussion of this. Scroll down to post 15 and 17.
