He is a foreign "diplomat" and as such has immunity.

Who came up with the idea of diplomatic immunity on our soil in the first place? And why?

8 Ringo the Gringo  Fri, Aug 28, 2009 2:23:59pm

He'll probably hit it off great with the NY nightlife crowd, especially if he brings along his squadron of sexy female body-guards.

9 Kosh's Shadow  Fri, Aug 28, 2009 2:24:00pm

They shouldn't let him fly in; in fact, no Libyan aircraft should be allowed to land in other than emergency situations in any civilized country until the bomber is back locked up in no better conditions than he had in Scotland.

Diplomatic immunity has been around for centuries. The idea springs from the immunity of heralds (the messengers between hostiles in the ancient world), which permitted opposing sides to negotiate with a reasonable assurance that the person of the messenger would be respected.

Don't kill the messenger...unless he brings a really, really bad message.

U.S. stock market faces possible wild ride in light volume
Trading concentrated in handful of financial shares; Dow's run up halted

The U.S. stock market's volatile display on Friday is likely to continue into next week, reflecting limited volume as well as investors' concentration on only a handful of stocks, with the financial sector the scene of most of the recent action.

"While volume is light right now, volatility is quite high so we could see some wild swings in prices if buying and selling programs kick in," said Kevin Giddis, an analyst at Morgan Keegan & Co.

On Friday, Citigroup Inc. (C 5.19, -0.04, -0.77%) , Fannie Mae (FNM 2.00, -0.04, -1.96%) , Freddie Mac (FRE 2.33, -0.07, -2.92%) , CIT Group Inc. (CIT 1.65, -0.03, -1.79%) and Bank of America Corp. (BAC 17.95, -0.03, -0.17%) topped the New York Stock Exchange's list of most actively traded, with stocks of all five on the rise, with CIT Group gaining almost 8% and Freddie Mac up 7.1%.

Stocks brushed off earlier gains to turn lower after a survey of consumer confidence fell to a four-month low. Of the S&P's 10 industry groups, financials, materials and information technology paced the gains, while health care stocks fronted the losses.

. The concept of immunity began with ancient tribes. In order to exchange information, messengers were allowed to travel from tribe to tribe without fear of harm. They were protected even when they brought bad news

34 Kragar  Fri, Aug 28, 2009 2:32:41pm

The National Endowment for the Art of Persuasion?

I’m not a “right-wing nut job.” It just goes against my core beliefs to sit quietly while the art community is used by the NEA and the administration to push an agenda other than the one for which it was created. It is not within the National Endowment for the Arts’ original charter to initiate, organize, and tap into the art community to help bring awareness to health care, or energy & environmental issues for that matter; and especially not at a time when it is being vehemently debated. Artists shouldn’t be used as tools of the state to help create a climate amenable to their positions, which is what appears to be happening in this instance. If the art community wants to tackle those issues on its own then fine. But tackling them shouldn’t come as an encouragement from the NEA to those they potentially fund at this coincidental time.

And if you think that my fear regarding the arts becoming a tool of the state is still unfounded, I leave you with a few statements made by the NEA to the art community participants on the conference call. “This is just the beginning. This is the first telephone call of a brand new conversation. We are just now learning how to really bring this community together to speak with the government. What that looks like legally?…bare with us as we learn the language so that we can speak to each other safely… “

There is that example from Twain's "Connecticut Yankee" where the Yankee suggests that they send a messenger to parley with the opposing side, and his sidekick Clarence points out that the response will be, "Dismember me this base-born knave and return him in a basket to he who sent him...other answer have I none."

Being a herald was a rough business back in the day.

My favorite bad day to be a messenger came from a sci-fi story. The heroes sent a prisoner back with the call to surrender. The bad guys showed up later with the messenger nailed spread eagle between 2 posts, rolled a tank up behind him and fired thru him at the good guys camp.

"I'm going to take that as a no."

We need to see GDP growing and employment increasing, not just a slowing of the sinking.

When the Titanic was going down, the back 3rd of the ship broke free and bobbed back to the surface for a few minutes. Some people thought that meant that this part of the ship would stay afloat and would be come a big life boat. Same mistake is being made now by those who mistake a slowing of the decline with improvement.

We have 14.5 million unemployed and growing. Until that changes for the better appreciably, we are not improving, despite what some survey may say.

Of course (you could have seen this one coming), it now turns out that the Lockerbie bomber isn't on death's door at all. Could live for 8 months, a year more -- who knows? The prison doctor who certified him as "about to die" and thus eligible for release was obviously pressured to do so by the politicians. He'll probably live to a ripe old age as a hero in Libya.

More shocking are the comments on that article in the Scottish newspaper. A few samples:

"Shock ...Megahi is not that ill . Of course he is not dying . This was a political conviction of an innocent man and it was politicians who released him . Now B. P. can start pumping the oil out of Lybia . I hope this poor man has the same recovery as Ernest Saunders ( Guiness fraud case remember excepy Saunders was guilty ) and live a peaceful life with his family"

And...

"He may have not been sick enough for to be released, but we were undoubtedly sick enough to jail him in the first place,, If our Judicial system was even half as good as what it should be, the guy would never have been taken to court !,,
I was so pleased to see the celebrations when he arrived home !,,
Now when are we going to bring Blair and the Labour party to justice for bombing the number 30 bus and three underground tube trains on 7/7 ?"

...etc. Each earning multiple updings. That seems to be the majority opinion: The bomber was innocent, the deal was a good idea to get some nice oil, and by the way, 7/7 was an inside job.

Has Scotland gone nuts?

Actually, this view is common in Scotland; I heard interviews with surviving family members of victims who died in the explosion who hold the view that this guy is a ringer sent in by Libya in response to demands that they turn over the perpetrators, and that the actual culpable parties have remained free all this time, thanks to Moammar.

No idea whether this is true or not, but it isn't an uncommon view over there.

Still a Colonel? Maybe he should retire, he's never going to make General.

He got that from Fidel Castro, who's been a colonel (comandante' in Spanish) for the last sixty-odd years. To true-believing Trotskyites like them, "General" has too many odious "bourgeois" connotations.

BTW, before he overthrew King Idriss in 1976, Qaddafi was a Lieutenant in the Libyan Air Force. Like Napoleon, he promoted himself from (semi-) junior officer to dictator in one jump.

/semi-junior in Bony's case, he was a Captain of Artillery.

Interesting:

The rubbish remark was a reference to the city’s unresolved battle to collect taxes on the estate. The Libyans have claimed that diplomatic properties are exempt. Mr. Wildes said a visit by Colonel Qaddafi would cost the city $20,000 a day in police overtime and other expenses.

Claiming diplomatic immunity from paying property taxes in New Jeresey and costing the tax payers 20,000 per day for police protection.

Abject failure.

Englewood plans anti-Qaddafi protest
FRIDAY, 28 AUGUST 2009 00:57 JERRY DEMARCO

Englewood Mayor Michael Wildes plans a protest Sunday against next month's visit by Libyan leader Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi to an estate next to the city's largest yeshiva. Debate is intensifying: Should the U.S. States accommodate the renounced terror supporter or find a way to keep the former "mad dog of the Middle East" off American soil?

Wildes has organized the 11 a.m. gathering outside the three-story, 25-room mansion near the corner of East Palisade Avenue and South Woodland Street. Scores of law enforcement officers and citizens from in and around the area are being invited.

"Hopefully it turns into a massive rally," former NYPD Commissioner Bernard B. Kerik, a Franklin Lakes resident, told CLIFFVIEWPILOT.COM tonight. "This is bad, bad thing to let this guy come in here. I think all New Jersey residents should be concerned."

Answers.com

Diplomats and their families have also been known to use diplomatic immunity to avoid prosecution for criminal behavior. This is illustrated in a 1983 case where the New York City Police Department suspected a diplomat's son of fifteen different rapes. The son was allowed to leave the United States without ever being taken to court, because he claimed diplomatic immunity. If diplomatic immunity is used as a shield, the police cannot prosecute, no matter how serious the crime may be.

Congressman Steve Rothman says he won't be coming to or staying in Englewood...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, August 28, 2009 4:04 pm EST
Contact: Bob Decheine[no phone numbers allowed]

Washington, D.C. based representatives of the Libyan government have informed Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ) that Col. Moammar Quaddafi, will not be staying in Englewood, New Jersey if he comes to the United States for the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly next month. This information has not yet been confirmed by the White House or the State Department.

“I am very pleased that Moammar Quaddafi will apparently not be coming to Englewood. His appearance would have presented unnecessary safety and security issues for the residents of Englewood and the Libyan diplomats,” said Rothman. I want to thank President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the literally dozens of their appointees I have had the pleasure to work so closely with over the past seven days in achieving this result. I als

o want to thank the Libyan government for their hard work and consideration in resolving this matter in such a positive fashion.”

I've heard that one, too. But the "accepted wisdom" (I know, know) is that dear Ernesto was getting ready to capitalize on his popularity in Cuba to try to move in to the center seat, first as Castro's "deputy leader' and then as el jefe' himself.

Fidel didn't like the idea, and told Raoul (head of the secret police) to "take care of things" in a way that wouldn't make it obvious that he (Fidel) was responsible. Which Raoul did.

Qaddafi Visit Prompts N.J. City to Seek Injunction (Update2)

Aug. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi’s possible plans to pitch a Bedouin-style tent on property owned by his government in Englewood, New Jersey, are being complicated by several felled oak trees and a metal fence.

As city officials threatened to seek a state court injunction, U.S. Representative Steve Rothman said he received word from the Libyan government that Qaddafi doesn’t plan to stay at the Englewood property. U.S. State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said he couldn’t immediately confirm Rothman’s report.

What was the theme to Dr No, or was there a particular one?

The Dr. No theme is the Monty Norman theme that is heard over the "gun barrel" view at the beginning of every 007 film since that one. Full length, it's about four minutes long, total, and was played over credits seen in a background of rapidly-moving and flashing dots like a cross between a computer display and Vegas neon.

the Maurice Binder visuals seen on most Bond films since then were apparently due to patrons complaining that the rapidly-flashing "dots" made it hard to read the credits. Although most males between twelve and about eighty watching a 007 movie today rarely read the credits anyway.

Technically, "Muammar al-Minyar al-Gaddafi", or "Muammar al-Qadafi" is the closest you can get in Romanized Arabic (latin alphabet, i.e., the one used in the Romance languages, including English). Literally translated, it means "Muammar, son of Minyar, of the family (clan?) of Gaddafi"- the latter being the name of his first known ancestor.

/Although it could also mean "from Gaddafi", meaning a town, village, etc. of that name- this is one of those things Arabic tends to be unclear about.

re: #268 Gus 802

Oh. I don't know. It would be strange if they didn't buy Uzis but that's SOP for that strange lot including Libya.

They used to use Czech Vz 61 "Skorpion" machine pistols in 7.65 x 17 mm Browning (.32 ACP to us Yanks). The Skorpion was easily concealable (about the size of an Ingram MAC-11, but skinnier), fired about 650 RPM (it had a rate-reducer to cut its cyclic rate), and came from the factory with both a suppressor ("silencer") and a shoulder-holster rig that could hide it under a light jacket.

It was very popular with the various terrorist groups in Europe and elsewhere in the Seventies and Eighties (Baader-Meinhof, Brigade Rosse, Renko Sekigun, etc.) both because .32 ACP ammo was available almost everywhere and because the MPs could be had pretty much for free from Omnipol, the old Czech export outfit, paid for by the USSR and delivered via'... Libya. (As in all the terrorist training camps they had there, back then.)

The "official" story was that the Skorpion was made as a defensive weapon for AFV crews. Of course, it was once observed that they probably manufactured enough Skorpions in .32 alone (it was also made in .380, 9 x 18 Makarov, and 9 x 19) to fill up every AFV in Europe and then some.

Hey Fenway. Haven't seen him either. I imagine it would effect the rail industry quite a bit especially if they start going after coal since coal transport is a major part of their revenue. Other effect will be caused by fossil fuels used by the locomotives.

re: #334 Fenway_Nation

Oh...and if cap and trade or the economy doesn't kill the railway industry, more regulations cooked up by the Dems probably will.

Came across this...

What is EPA doing to control idle emissions from locomotives?

EPA is working hard to reduce emissions from locomotives, both while they are pulling freight and while they are idling. However, the Clean Air Act does not give EPA unlimited ability to regulate locomotives. Section 213(a)(5) and related provisions provide EPA the authority to establish emission standards for newly manufactured and remanufactured locomotives, as well as to prohibit railroads or anyone else from tampering with emission controls. For locomotives not yet required to use the idle reduction technologies, the Clean Air Act provisions do not appear to provide EPA with particular authority to prevent railroads from allowing them to idle. Thus, as described below, EPA’s regulatory efforts to reduce emissions from idling locomotives focus on requiring the application of automatic idle reduction technologies to the locomotives themselves rather than directly regulating when railroads may allow locomotives to idle...

More here:

[Link: www.epa.gov...]

Now, if they're citing the Clean Air Act it could always be amended with new legislation or possibly through the coming CO2 regulations.

Agreed, but I've taken that as a "given" since suffering through a high-school Civics and Economics class (full year) taught by a self-described Fabian Socialist. Among whose brilliant theories was that Communism was the best thing that ever happened to Mainland China, the Cultural Revolution notwithstanding.

He didn't appreciate my using the China (PRC) News Agency's own figures for the economic catastrophe that the Great Leap Forward (1958-63) was for the PRC. He'd never bothered to look them up, as he just assumed that it must have worked, because it was "ideologically pure".

He then accused me of thinking the Mandarins and/or Chiang Kai-Shek were "better". My response?

"China hasn't had a reasonable, rational, worthwhile government in its entire history, period. In going from the Mandarins to the Maoists, all the country did was trade one bunch of clueless hereditary aristocrats with lousy fashion sense for a bunch of even more clueless self-elevated aristocrats with even worse fashion sense."

Believe it or not, I passed the class, because my coursework was almost flawless (I got 100% on the final).

re: #335 Gus 802

Actually, I wasn't even factoring in locomotive emissions into cap & trade. I think short-haul and reigonal railways will be decimated by this- especially the ones that either service coal mines and coal-fired power plants or some of our own domestic natural gas or oil deposits (the Bakken Oil field and Marcellus Shale in particular). Even if they don't haul a drop of oil, they still haul vast quantities of pipe, 'frac sand' and rigging equipment for some of the energy exploration companies.

Or let's say a shortline railway is already compliant with (or exempt from) the cap and trade impositions...but their main customer- a paper mill or factory is affected adversely. What happens to that railway when a good chunk of it's business goes away when the factory it serves is shut down as a cost-cutting measure, relcoated overseas or shit down by the feds?

Britain accused of breaking promise to US over Abdel Baset Ali al-Megrahi

Britain was accused last night of reneging on a promise to the United States that the Lockerbie bomber would serve his sentence in Scotland.

According to confidential correspondence obtained by The Times, ministers urged the Scottish government to consider returning Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi to Libya under a prisoner transfer deal in an apparent breach of a decade-old pledge.

A former Cabinet minister and two sources close to talks over the handover of suspects in 1999 told The Times that Robin Cook, then Foreign Secretary, promised Madeleine Albright, US Secretary of State at the time, that anyone found guilty would serve their sentence in Scotland, where the airliner exploded with the loss of 270 lives.

A senior US official said: “There was a clear understanding at the time of the trial that al-Megrahi would serve his sentence in Scotland. In the 1990s the UK had the same view. It is up to them to explain what changed.”

re: #357 Fenway_Nation

The future outlook in these sectors looks grim. I don't see the administration playing anything but an antagonistic role with these industries. In fact the veracity of lawsuits that will come from Justice will probably increase over the next three years and possibly 7 years. Short of a lawsuit from said sectors I don't see what can be done since the EPA is basically isolated from democratic rule.

Since we basically do not do nukes for electricity, what would power US high-speed trains?

Wind or solar?

You would have to first create a wind power infrastructure. You would also have to create a solar power infrastructure. Both of which of course are not efficient in all regions of the USA.

Second you would have to create an electric locomotive infrastructure which would require new engines, rail line power transfer and a slew of right-of-way issues which would go along with it. That would mean powering every single rail line in the country.

This would take decades and if it is done no one should think that it could be done overnight.

Oh yes - all of you people blithely tap away at your digital computers - perpetuating the numericide that Grace Hopper set into motion. All of those 0's being forced off of their registers by those "1's".

1 - as in "true"

1 - as in "I'm number one!"

1 - as in one big, oppressive phallus.

Millions of them occupying the lands registers that gynocentric "0's" (unjustly labeled false!) once lived on in harmony.

But you don't care - do you? Oh no - you don't hear their screams. That fan noise drowns out their cry for justice.

But I am a person of conscience - I use an analog computer that I designed and built.

I remember some 25-30 years ago Midwestern railways falling like dominoes; The Milwaukee Road and the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific being the most spectacular failures. I think other railways like the Missouri Pacific, St Louis-San Francisco; Missouri, Kansas & Texas; Western Pacific or Chicago & Northwestern being merged into larger, more solvent railways like Burlington Northern or Union Pacific...probably to avoid the lengthy, prolonged unpleasant death throes that tore apart the Milwaukee Road or CRI&P.

Now that there's essentially four class one freight carriers in the United States, I have to wonder what will happen to the industry in general if a Union Pacific or BNSF goes the same way as a Milwaukee Road or 'Route Rock'...

Since we basically do not do nukes for electricity, what would power US high-speed trains?

Wind or solar?

Only when it blows or shines. Otherwise, fossil fuel.

That being the "elephant in the living room" in the whole "Going Green" delusion. As with "electric cars". the electricity to recharge them has to be generated, and if it's not coming from a "carbon neutral" source like hydroelectric, nuclear, or Holy Wind and Sun it isn't "reducing our carbon footprint"- it's just hiding it by moving it to a powerplant instead of putting it on the street.

When I hear "deep-ecos" saying that all we need for electric (fill in the blank) is "better battery technology", I have to restrain myself from smacking them one. Batteries just store electricity, they don't generate it.

They demand we stop using fossil fuel, they are determined to dismantle dams to "make rivers wild again", and nuclear power is to them the equivalent of Frankenstein's Monster- they want to lynch it and its creators. Because Holy Wind And Sun Will Save Our Souls- and they'll still have the Internet, WiFi, Starbuck's, etc., while "feeling good about themselves".

Sorry. Reality is going to hit them in the face just like it has California. Only worse.

As for me, I'm studying up on how to be a blacksmith without electric-powered anything. Emphasis on how to make horseshoes and harness irons.

UAE Seizes North Korean Weapons Shipment to Iran

Aug. 28 (Bloomberg) -- The United Arab Emirates has seized a ship carrying North Korean weapons bound for Iran, in violation of a United Nations arms embargo, diplomats said.

The UAE two weeks ago notified the UN Security Council of the seizure, according to the diplomats, who spoke on condition they aren’t named because the communication hasn’t been made public.

The council committee that monitors enforcement of UN sanctions against North Korea wrote a letter to Iran asking for an explanation and one to the UAE expressing appreciation for the cooperation, the envoys said. No response has been received or further action taken, they said.

Some of Obama's well-known antisemitic friends are in Israel trying to cause trouble:

NYT August 28, 2009
Bilin Journal

In Village, Palestinians See Model for Their Cause

By ETHAN BRONNER
BILIN, West Bank — Every Friday for the past four and a half years, several hundred demonstrators — Palestinian villagers, foreign volunteers and Israeli activists — have walked in unison to the Israeli barrier separating this tiny village from the burgeoning settlement of Modiin Illit, part of which is built on the village’s land. One hundred feet away, Israeli soldiers watch and wait.

The protesters chant and shout and, inevitably, a few throw stones. Then just as inevitably, the soldiers open fire with tear gas and water jets, lately including a putrid oil-based liquid that makes the entire area stink.

It is one of the longest-running and best organized protest operations in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and it has turned this once anonymous farming village into a symbol of Palestinian civil disobedience, a model that many supporters of the Palestinian cause would like to see spread and prosper.

For that reason, a group of famous left-leaning elder statesmen, including former President Jimmy Carter — who caused controversy by suggesting that the Israeli occupation of the West Bank amounted to apartheid — came to Bilin on Thursday and told the local organizers how much they admired their work and why it was vital to keep it going.

The retired Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu, also on the visit, said, “Just as a simple man named Gandhi led the successful nonviolent struggle in India and simple people such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King led the struggle for civil rights in the United States, simple people here in Bilin are leading a nonviolent struggle that will bring them their freedom.”

Mr. Tutu, a South African Nobel Peace Prize winner, spoke on rocky soil, surrounded by the remains of tear gas canisters and in front of coils of barbed wire, part of the barrier that Israel began building in 2002 across the West Bank as a violent Palestinian uprising was under way. Israel said its main purpose was to stop suicide bombers from crossing into Israel, but the route of the barrier — a mix of fencing, guard towers and concrete wall — dug deep into the West Bank in places, and Palestinian anger over the barrier is as much about lost land as about lost freedom...

UAE tells UN it seized ship carrying secret cache of North Korea arms intended for Iran

U.N. sources say the United Arab Emirates has seized a ship carrying a secret cache of North Korean arms bound for Iran.

Officials say a U.N. sanctions committee received a confidential letter from the UAE saying the 18-year-old cargo ship ANL Australia was carrying rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons. The officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Nice quote from Lautenberg:

“I commend the White House and Secretary Clinton for working diligently to stop Moammar Gadhafi from stepping foot in our state. It appears that we have prevailed in our fight to stop this dangerous figure from visiting New Jersey next month. Col. Gadhafi’s visit would have added insult to injury for the families who recently suffered through the release of the convicted Pan Am Flight 103 bomber. Colonel Gadhafi still has blood on his hands and I pledge to remain vigilant to ensure that he never enters New Jersey.”

Excellent! Yeah, you also have to get the "official tree planting guy" that belong to the "official tree planters union." /

A similar thing happened in front of my house last year. As part of a "city beautification" project, they had teams from the Parks Dept. planting Lombardy poplars on all the main streets. Imagine my surprise to find one in front of my house.

Now, I'm a country boy. I used to have Lombardys on my property in the boonies. They get big. As in "100-feet-tall plus with root systems to match, and in under twenty years on average". (One in my back yard in 1965 got "topped out" by the wingtip of an ANG C-130E Hercules on a low-level training mission; no damage to the Herc', but the look on the trainee pilot's face as 20 feet of poplar got snicked off like a rosebush getting pruned back was priceless.) They need a lot of room, a lot of sun, and lots of water.

So, where did they plant this seven-foot, seedling baby behemoth?

Between the curb and the sidewalk, in a space about two feet wide, right over the sewer, water, and gas lines. all about two to five feet right under it.

Assuming it doesn't die (good bet, as it's looked pretty sickly this season) in a decade or so it's going to give the city Utilities and Street departments some interesting problems. And since the space it's in is city property, it's not my job to fix it for them.

/should be interesting to watch, though.

cheers

Do you have an "urban forester?" They have one in Denver. Municipalities are always going gaga for trees yet they don't seem to understand that they require water and maintenance. In my case I've put trees 5 feet away from easement lines and as you mentioned the roots grow to the same size as the spread. That means something with a 50 foot spread will be 45 feet into an easement that's 5 feet away. But, they want that tree count. Astonishingly enough they don't even consider native vegetation. It's like planting a maple tree in Phoenix sometimes -- better yet make that a cedar tree.

The ship is owned by a French company. If the ship was being operated by that company, they should be held responsible for the cargo. Europeans need to stop looking the other way and be held accountable for doing business with NK & Iran. Let the great commie paradise of North Korea build their own fucking ships.

Ted Kennedy's Soviet Gambit

Picking his way through the Soviet archives that Boris Yeltsin had just thrown open, in 1991 Tim Sebastian, a reporter for the London Times, came across an arresting memorandum. Composed in 1983 by Victor Chebrikov, the top man at the KGB, the memorandum was addressed to Yuri Andropov, the top man in the entire USSR. The subject: Sen. Edward Kennedy.

"On 9-10 May of this year," the May 14 memorandum explained, "Sen. Edward Kennedy's close friend and trusted confidant [John] Tunney was in Moscow." (Tunney was Kennedy's law school roommate and a former Democratic senator from California.) "The senator charged Tunney to convey the following message, through confidential contacts, to the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Y. Andropov."

Yahoo! BuzzKennedy's message was simple. He proposed an unabashed quid pro quo. Kennedy would lend Andropov a hand in dealing with President Reagan. In return, the Soviet leader would lend the Democratic Party a hand in challenging Reagan in the 1984 presidential election. "The only real potential threats to Reagan are problems of war and peace and Soviet-American relations," the memorandum stated. "These issues, according to the senator, will without a doubt become the most important of the election campaign."

Kennedy made Andropov a couple of specific offers.

First he offered to visit Moscow. "The main purpose of the meeting, according to the senator, would be to arm Soviet officials with explanations regarding problems of nuclear disarmament so they may be better prepared and more convincing during appearances in the USA." Kennedy would help the Soviets deal with Reagan by telling them how to brush up their propaganda.

Then he offered to make it possible for Andropov to sit down for a few interviews on American television. "A direct appeal ... to the American people will, without a doubt, attract a great deal of attention and interest in the country. ... If the proposal is recognized as worthy, then Kennedy and his friends will bring about suitable steps to have representatives of the largest television companies in the USA contact Y.V. Andropov for an invitation to Moscow for the interviews. ... The senator underlined the importance that this initiative should be seen as coming from the American side

When President Reagan chose to confront the Soviet Union, calling it the evil empire that it was, Sen. Edward Kennedy chose to offer aid and comfort to General Secretary Andropov. On the Cold War, the greatest issue of his lifetime, Kennedy got it wrong.

Really wrong.

Some wild assed unfounded speculation on the Iranian Arms shipment seized: Iran doesn't need to buy RPG's from Korea, they can make their own.
So either :

a. These small arms are "special" with advanced capabilities or
b. These small arms are normal

In the case of A, selling Iran advanced capabilities is bad, and I hope this isn't Putin.
In the case of B, if they are normal - then they are destined for purposes outside of Iran and the mullahocracy doesn't want them traceable back to Iran.

Castro in NYC

There were press reports about how the Cubans treated their rooms at The Shelburne. It was widely asserted that they brought live chickens into the rooms and plucked and dressed them at 3 and 4 in the mornings. Also, they supposedly threw lighted cigars onto expensive carpets, and even cooked food on camp stoves set up in the bathrooms.

Fidel Castro, visiting New York City in 1960, complained about the treatment he was getting at a Manhattan hotel and stormed out. Its managers later put up for auction the chicken feathers they said he left behind in Room 806.

Boxer: Appoint caretaker for Kennedy seat

Boxer joined a steadily growing chorus of lawmakers favoring a quickly nominated successor to Kennedy, arguing that an interim senator would be in the best interests of Massachusetts voters.

"Clearly, what's best is keep the election, that's fine, but just add a piece that says, 'In the interim, let's have a caretaker, someone who is there,' " she said during an interview on MSNBC. "Otherwise, Massachusetts in the Senate loses 50 percent of its power — 50 percent of its ability to fight for the people of Massachusetts."

Too gripes, 64 bit isn't automatically enabled, you have to edit com.apple.Boot.plist file and the SATA II firmware to allow 3GBit SATA wasn't fixed, it's still stuck at 1.5GBit.

I think the SATA problem is with the MacBooks. My MacPro shows 3GBit. Regarding the 32bit kernel, it's not necessary to run 64bit applications. Here's an interesting discussion of this. Scroll down to post 15 and 17.

I think the SATA problem is with the MacBooks. My MacPro shows 3GBit. Regarding the 32bit kernel, it's not necessary to run 64bit applications. Here's an interesting discussion of this. Scroll down to post 15 and 17.

The EFI update 1.7 fixed the SATA issue for the 2009 MBP, but not the late 2008 even though they have the same chip set.

Interesting discussion on the 64bit v. 32bit.

Obama and the Media: Trouble in Paradise

Obama was the hottest news story of their generation. Rather than covering the long-shot freshman senator who would be crushed in February, Obama campaign reporters experienced the reflected glory of being along for a historic journey. There was plenty of motivation to keep that journey going.

Conversely, Obama making a hash out of health care provides plenty of good copy for the White House press corps. And because Obama fatigue has set in with the reading and viewing public, skeptical stories match the national mood.

Some are still in the tank for Obama. But many liberal reporters think the president is blowing the left’s big chance.

Uh-huh.

RE:

The Kennedy KGB matter.

From Kengors book:

Notes (full text) page 369

25. To the best of my knowledge, this book is the first full examination and presentation of the Chebrikov document. The document came from the Central Committee Archives of the Communist Party of the former USSR. There are a number of different archives from the Soviet period, including, for example, the KGB Archives, the Comintern Archives, among others. The archives were opened in the early 1990s by the Boris Yeltsin government, whereupon scholars and journalists eagerly began digging into the documents. The Yeltsin government, for various reasons, closed many of the archives, including the Central Committee Archives, in the 1994-95 period.

The document that I cite here was apparently initially found by a London Times reporter in early 1992. The London Sunday Times subsequently published an article on the document, titled “Teddy, the KGB and the top secret file,” in the February 2, 1992 edition. The Times article, however, was brief and included only a few quotes from the document; the newspaper published only a photo of a small section from the upper left corner of page one of the five page document. Once the Times piece ran, a number of people scrambled to the archives to obtain their own copy of the document, which then began circulating in and around Moscow. Various individuals obtained copies. Shortly thereafter, the Russian government closed the file.

Among those who obtained a full copy was Herb Romerstein, author of the seminal work on the Venona papers, The Verona Secrets. Romerstein is a former staff member of the U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and a seasoned veteran of archival research from the Cold War period. Romerstein continues to do research from intelligence archives of former Communist countries. My copy was obtained through Marko Suprun, who got the copy from Herb Romerstein and Walter Zaryckyj. Romerstein provided details to me on the document’s origin in a number of discussions in June 2005. Unquote.

That's why relativism goes straight down the tubes. If you say "I disagree," you introduce a paradox. Agreeing with "I disagree" is an admission that relativism is wrong. Disagreeing with that statement means you have to abandon relativism to defend it. Whoops.

No, but you can't endorse the principle "there are no general truths" without creating a general truth -- which has to apply to itself. Therefore relativism is logically inconsistent, and a very rare example of a principle which refutes itself.

My question was about whether people are saying that the Voltaire quote isn't true or doesn't apply.

Some biography about Qaddafi from

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

"Gaddafi entered the military academy in Benghazi in 1963, where he and a few of his fellow militants organized a secretive group dedicated to overthrowing the pro-Western Libyan monarchy. After graduating in 1965, he was sent to Britain for further training at the British Army Staff College, now the Joint Services Command and Staff College, returning in 1966 as a commissioned officer in the Signal Corps."

From time to time Gaddafi has responded to domestic and external opposition with violence. His revolutionary committees called for the assassination of Libyan dissidents living abroad in April 1980, with Libyan hit squads sent abroad to murder them. On 26 April, Gaddafi set a deadline of 11 June for dissidents to return home or be "in the hands of the revolutionary committees".[5] Nine Libyans were murdered during that time, five of them in Italy.

By the mid-1980s, he was widely regarded in the West as the principal financier of international terrorism. Reportedly, Gaddafi was a major financier of the "Black September Movement" which perpetrated the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics, and was accused by the United States of being responsible for direct control of the 1986 Berlin discotheque bombing that killed three people and wounded more than 200, of whom a substantial number were U.S. servicemen. He is also said to have paid "Carlos the Jackal" to kidnap and then release a number of Saudi Arabian and Iranian oil ministers. Tensions between Libya and the West reached a peak during the Ronald Reagan administration, which tried to overthrow Gaddafi. The Reagan administration viewed Libya as a belligerent rogue state because of its uncompromising stance on Palestinian independence, its support for revolutionary Iran in the 1980-1988 war against Saddam Hussein's Iraq (see Iran–Iraq War), and its backing of "liberation movements" in the developing world. Reagan himself dubbed Gaddafi the "mad dog of the Middle East." In December 1981 the US State Department invalidated US passports for travel to Libya, and in March 1982 the U.S. declared a ban on the import of Libyan oil [7] and the export to Libya of U.S. oil industry technology; European nations did not follow suit. Libya has also been a supporter of the Polisario Front in their fight against Spanish colonialism and Moroccan military occupation.
In October 2008 Libya paid $1.5 billion into a fund which will be used to compensate relatives of the

1. Lockerbie bombing victims with the remaining 20%;
2. American victims of the 1986 Berlin discotheque bombing;
3. American victims of the 1989 UTA Flight 772 bombing; and,
4. Libyan victims of the 1986 US bombing of Tripoli and Benghazi.

As a result, President Bush signed an executive order restoring the Libyan government's immunity from terror-related lawsuits and dismissing all of the pending compensation cases in the US, the White House said.[10]

On 28 June 2007 Megrahi was granted the right to a second appeal against the Lockerbie bombing conviction.[11] One month later, the Bulgarian medics were released from jail in Libya. They returned home to Bulgaria and were pardoned by Bulgarian president, Georgi Parvanov.
