I think you are leaving someone(s) out as to why Trump did this cover up.

Melania and the Trump sons and daughters.

They may have not known and Melania may have left him and that whole scene could have too much to overcome to allow him to run.

Also, it wasn’t known by the other (17?) candidates in the primaries who could have used it against him.

Melania didn’t know? She certainly doesn’t care. Except for Barron, the rest of the family know his record; he cheated on their mothers. And didn’t the payments occur after he accepted the nomination?
