Not sure that would have helped so much. The oil isn’t coming from a surface leak, it’s being spit out of a leaking head on the well, 5000 feet down. By the time that oil gets to the surface it has already spread far and wide.

Well, they know or could have estimated how much it would spread and could have planned accordingly.

And does it spread? It doesn’t actually disperse in the water, does it? I thought it was waves and wind that cause it to disperse.
