Well said. The Dems just had to move toward the center and give some ground ideologically. What the GOP needs to do is accept a multicultural and multirelgious emergence.

Since politics itself is so cynical, moderating one’s ideology (when the alternative is continuing to lose elections) is not that hard—like you said, the Dems did it back in the late 80s-early 90s.

But moderating the nativism and religious bigotry that define so much of the GOP today won’t be as easy. These feeling are rooted in deep seated resentment, and have existed for generations.

There’s also the fact that there doesn’t seem to be any leader willing to rein their excesses in. All those that seem to have some kind of spine are either out of office, primaryed out, retiring or too cynical to act.
