Hopefully, that damage can be fixed. The Chechens (and many of their neighbors) have very legitimate gripes with Russia, and reasons to leave.

Seccession, in my view, is really only reasonable when the nationalities in question have been persecuted to the point where they have no reason to trust the Government.

This also applies to Kosovo, the Presevo Valley, and Vojvodina in Serbia, among others.
