One of the worst states for lynchings was Indiana. It was the national headquarters for the revival of the KKK and had many, many “sundown” towns. Of course, we also know that St. Louis was no picnic. Hell, a lot of the midwest remains very segregated.
I think I remember reading that in the 20’s, 1/3 Indiana white Protestant native born males was a KKK member.
