With all the stonewalling from Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell about this, one might speculate they were either involved, knew about it and did nothing, or clueless (the last isn’t a crime in American politics, sadly).

Going even farther out on the speculation limb than I did earlier, I wonder if Hatch might nominate fellow Mormon Mitt Romney as VP. Confirmation would be a breeze. The 83 year old Hatch could then resign and hand over to Mittens, putting him in the White House after all.
