The impactor may have been a meteorite after all, as a few years ago I recall seeing that they had discovered a crater. Guess what, it filled with water, and nobody thought to examine the small lake for actually being the crater.

Correct, the debate is really down to comet versus meteorite, but any of the more exotic explanations, including “mini black hole” have been rejected. Comet, meteorite, either, it was one massive event, one that hopefully we will never get to see again.

Side topic, I have a lunar meteorite and a MArtian meteorite fragment in my meteorite collection. Really neat to own something from another body in our galaxy.
