In the previous thread, people were discussing a U.N. resolution that would condemn use of death penalty to target LGBTQ people.

Eclectic Cyborg mentioned Japan, like the U.S., voted against it.

Don’t take this as gospel, because it’s just supposition on my part, but I think Japan voted against it because the death penalty is still used here and the government doesn’t want anything chipping away at it.

While there are activists campaigning to end capital punishment, opinion polls indicate it remains generally popular with the public.

That surprised me. Japan seems like such an advanced country that I’d never have guessed that it still has something as barbaric as the death penalty.
