They’re focused on hypothetical polls that have Bernie winning. Your’e absolutely right. Bernie would have lost. I don’t think it would have been as bad you think it would be because I think many states are going Democratic no matter what but it would have been the worst Dem showing since Dukakis in ‘88 easily. But then again, as you do get at, I didn’t live through 1972 or 1984 even.

I was eight in 1984, so my experience is second-hand, but I think it really would have been that bad. On the rare occasion that Bernie was cross-examined or seriously questioned, he fell to pieces. Witness the infamous New York Daily News interview in which he couldn’t explain the “break-up-the-banks” proposal that supposedly had been his main goal in life for 45 years. Or the time when he literally walked out of a hostile interview in Arizona. When the bots came for him after doing his dirty work, he’d have been absolutely flummoxed.
