Since St. Edward, King of England died in 979 the English throne has generally gone down hill. There have been a few brief highlights every 500 years or so, but generally the English royalty has been forgettable. Collecting charity and cutting ribbons is nice and commendable, but it will not rally a nation to greatness.

Since Morrissey is dissing Cromwell and the current dynasty, and touting his Irishness, he’s almost certainly a partisan of James II and the Jacobites. I’d not understood that part of the song until you mentioned it.

(I’m sympathetic to royalism myself, but the Stuarts - whose rightful property the Crown is - also had the misfortune to be the biggest duds in British dynastic history. They weren’t much good even as Kings of Scotland.)

The part I did understand at the time I posted, was the bit about wanting to be publicly patriotic without people calling him a racist for it.
