The Constitution was based off Enlightenment principles, and Greco-Roman traditions. Democracies and Republics pre-date the Christian faith.

Would he hadn’t said it publicly even if he believes it privately. My ENEMY is NOT the Gay Couple living two blocks over.
That couple may be my Political Opponents, I do NOT believe that their relationship constitutes “marriage” as I understand it - AND - generally they do not want to lop my head off. They might just be POLITICALLY if not SEXUALLY - Educable.
The folks that would like to lop my Head Off ARE my ENEMY!
