I saw a cheap e-machine with Windows 7 preloaded and saw the specs. OMG! Is 6GB of ram and a 750GB hdd needed just to run the blasted OS? /

No. I think it’s a 1 GB RAM minimum. 7 is supposed to have a lighter footprint. I have heard some tech journalists relate how it improved performance on older machines.
