Story I read was that ship put into port in Beirut with engine troubles years ago and was declared unseaworthy. The cargo, ~2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, was unloaded and stored in a warehouse at the port in 2014 - and it was that stored cargo that blew up yesterday. Apparently, it was never disposed of or sold or whatever in the intervening six years.
