Still is, in a number of places, along with dog-fighting, and other blood sports. It;s not gone at all, and it’s only disapproved of or forbidden in some places; however, those who delight in seeing one beast tear apart another may choose from any number of such “sports” today, and without violating any local law.

And when an esteemed figure admits that he participates in such things, he is vilified and castigated for it, and sent to jail for it.

This is pretty simple: In the old days, it was considered perfectly normal to take the wife and kids to watch blood sports. These days, in the US, it is far, far out of the mainstream to do so. In that one, easy example, modern society is less depraved— if you think that dogfighting is depraved, which I do.
