I do feel that “the young” as you call them probably have become far too detached from reality. I don’t know if it is the tawdry television or the overdose of corn syrup, but there is a definitely lack of grounded-ness wrt expectation about the future.

But… it’s not just “the young.” Our entire society seems way too easily distracted by shiny bobbles and magickal thinking is everywhere. Michelle Bachmann is just a symptom, not a cause. That a quack (Ron Paul) is now the hot item among Iowa Republicans is also a symptom. Everyone wants to escape reality.
