Yes, there were and are racists in the south…not a voting bloc any sane politician would pander to. As far as distribution of racists….let’s talk about Boston.
No doubt Boston was very racist, I remember the busing issue, among other things. As was most of the US. The point is not that racism was limited to the south. The point is that there are reasons the Republicans are saddled with racism baggage. They used the issue to their advantage to win the south. They continued to exploit the issue until fairly recently. Denying that history as they do, even if today’s Republicans are in fact not racist, is not going to help them win over blacks, that’s for sure.
