Trump already has that demographic sewn up. But he knows he needs to get some support from Hispanic voters or he’s fucked. Hence, this dumb idea. He’s flailing around in desperation.

The demographic he doesn’t have sewn up is the same one that he’s trying to woo with his “What have you got to lose?” tone-deaf speeches, namely the fence-sitters in the GOP ranks who are considering staying home or voting for Johnson. He’s trying to overcome their guilt by assuring them that they’re not voting for a racist, even though it’s pretty obvious to everybody else that that’s exactly what they’d be voting for.
