I think that’s a fair question, especially after Brexit.
Of course when the rubber finally hit the road (no matter how late in the game it was), Mitch McConnell betrayed his nation and his party continues to do so.

The question was “why didn’t we”?, that included the GOP congress as well as the the prez, and yes, there was obviously a reason that the GOP was not about to act against their own interests
