This is pretty simple: In the old days, it was considered perfectly normal to take the wife and kids to watch blood sports. These days, in the US, it is far, far out of the mainstream to do so. In that one, easy example, modern society is less depraved— if you think that dogfighting is depraved, which I do.

Football is a blood sport.

And in many countries, bullfighting is considered perfectly acceptable family entertainment.

Dogfighting is widespread in this country and some people were quite happy to defend Vick’s involvement.

The notion that culture has somehow “improved” since the “Enlightenment” is a sad fantasy.
