Out of curiosity, if guns were made illegal and acquiring illegal firearms was punished harshly, would that harsh penalty be a deterrent, or would bad guys still get guns because they don’t obey the law?

In Britain, fewer criminals carry guns. Most use knives or just trust to their size and strength. So, going on the evidence [and will you call this, too, an unsupported statement, backed only by comic books?], that penalty would be a big deterrent and would have a big impact on the rate of gun crime. Criminals do in fact reckon their odds, and this is further proof of it.
