I forget who it was, but one media theorist has the approach that all narratives, no matter how inconsistent-appearing, must actually be consistent in their own reality. So when Darrin changed to another person, well, that’s easy because that universe has actual magic. For a lot of narratives, where people just act fucking weird all the time, like horror movies, the explanation is these people are fundamentally different than us, that we are actually looking at an alternate universe, normally with much stupider people but often also people with ESP.

The movie Arlington Road, for example, doesn’t make any sense unless Tim Robbins character is telepathic and clairvoyant: his entire plan involves perfectly predicting Jeff Bridges’ actions and the time at which they’ll occur.
