An Interesting LA Times Piece on the Legacy of NSA Leader Gen. Keith Alexander

Here’s a good piece by LA Times reporter Ken Dilanian on NSA leader Gen. Keith Alexander, and the vast expansion of NSA digital surveillance over which he presided: NSA Chief’s Legacy Is Shaped by Big Data, for Better and Worse.

The overhaul, which Alexander ordered shortly after taking leadership of the agency in August 2005, enabled U.S. ground commanders to find out when an insurgent leader had turned on his cellphone, where he was and whom he was calling.

“Absolutely invaluable,” retired Gen. David H. Petraeus, the former U.S. commander in Iraq, said in an interview as he described the NSA’s efforts, which led to the dismantling of networks devoted to burying roadside bombs.

Alexander “sped the place up,” Inglis said.

But something else seems likely to shape the legacy of the NSA’s longest-serving director, who retired Friday: something that Alexander failed to anticipate, did not prepare for and even now has trouble understanding.

An especially interesting note: the NSA’s spokespeople, after years of living in an insular culture protected from view, were clearly unprepared for the radical misrepresentations of Glenn Greenwald and his cronies and were too slow to make their case.

When Snowden’s disclosures began, Alexander and his deputies knew they were in for a storm. But they felt sure the American public would be comforted when they learned of the agency’s internal controls and the layers of oversight by Congress, the White House and a federal court.

“For the first week or so, we all had this idea that we had nothing to be ashamed of, and that everyone who looked at this in context would quickly agree with us,” [NSA top civilian official John “Chris”] Inglis said.

Instead, polls show, many Americans believe that the NSA is reading their emails and listening to their phone calls. A libertarian group put an advertisement in the Washington transit system calling Alexander, a 62-year-old career military officer, a liar. U.S. technology companies are crying betrayal.

The axis of Greenwald constantly denies there’s even a possibility that leaking these secret documents will cause harm to US national security, but the people who actually deal with these issues have a very different opinion:

…Eventually, in five or 10 years, the United States will recover from the Snowden affair, Alexander said. But for now, once-fruitful tactics have become all but useless.

Sophisticated adversaries already knew a lot about U.S. capabilities, of course. But often, “the reason that we’re successful is because people are lazy. They don’t do what they’re supposed to do,” said retired Lt. Gen. Richard Zahner, a former senior NSA official.
Now, Russian ground commanders and Al Qaeda cell leaders are on notice that the NSA is nearly everywhere.

Alexander leaves office not knowing how deep the damage will go. It’s a frustrating situation for a man who made his mark acquiring more information than anyone before him. Officials believe Snowden accessed as many as 1.7 million documents, but Alexander said investigators don’t know how many of those he actually took, nor what he’s passed to others.

“What the reporters have, what the Russians have, what the Chinese have” all remain questions, he said. “We don’t know for sure on a lot of those things.”

Read the whole thing for more details; meanwhile, this article has predictably sent the Mighty Glenn Greenwald into a rage. All morning he’s been tweeting insults at Ken Dilanian.

(He retweeted the next two insulting comments from his sycophants…)

In response, Ken Dilanian had a single comment about this barrage of abuse:

You’re supposed to see experience as evidence of corruptness. Because The Man is corrupt, irrevocably and intrinsically, Because Um Reasons, and therefore anyone with time dealing with The Man cannot be trusted.

Better to be a lily-white naive precious flower, because though you may have no clue about anything whatsoever, and least you’re honest and excited and pure about it!

Intrinsic Teahadi/Dudebro mindset is intrinsic.

4 lawhawk  Mar 31, 2014 10:57:58am

Once again, Greenwald claims to be the smartest guy in the room and thinks that he knows more than the seasoned experts and those who have actual intimate knowledge about national security. But that isn’t stopping Greenwald from insisting that he knows more, and is the holy last word on classified data, intel, and US national security.

The NSA underestimated the malfeasance and misrepresentations of Greenwald and the Dudebros. The series of articles that Greenwald and his cohorts (Poitras among them) have been heavy on ink, massive on innuendo and supposition, but light on actual violation of US law on US civil rights.

Instead of focusing on the civil rights, Greenwald and others continue going through the Snowden cache (which Snowden insisted was to reveal civil rights violations of Americans) and revealing all manner of program that are wholly legal under US law to surveil foreign entities, nations, and groups, including al Qaeda.

It’s not a crime for the US to spy on allies or foreign nations (or foreign nationals). It’s part of the NSA mission, except Greenwald has put up a massive smokescreen in claiming some US right has been trampled.

Of course, it’s rich for Greenwald to make these claims considering that he needed assistance in setting up his own secure email system, barely understands the technical documents he’s written about, and keeps getting supposition and fact mixed up.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, will get in the way of his narrative. Facts be damned.

That’s what I thought. It’s really tiresome to read these kinds of screeds if you’re not a loon on the subject yourself.

To reel in the normals, you need the Washington pundit approach, where the writer spends the column asserting how reasonable and nonpartisan he is, then wrestling pseudo-rationally with the material, and finally coming to the inescapable logical conclusion that whatever the 0.1% wants is the right thing to do.

I can hear the “libertarians” screams of impotent anger already on this one with their “no government regulations!” and “nanny state” mantras.

NHTSA to require backup cameras on all vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a regulation Monday requiring all vehicles, including new trucks and buses, to have rear-view visibility — in effect, requiring backup cameras.

The rule applies to all vehicles with a gross weight rating up to 10,000 pounds — from the smallest subcompact to commercial vans. It begins phasing in with 2016 models and takes full effect in May 2018.

The rule follows an outcry from consumer groups and families that have been touched by tragedies involving back-over accidents, especially those involving children in parking lots. They had been pushing hard against delays in implementing tougher standards. NHTSA says it has been listening.

Been trying for an hour and a half to re-install my minimalist HP Deskjet printer on Windows 7. Win-doze housekeeping software is designed to be useless. I finally managed to get the driver, and shit stupid win-doze has been grinding away for 7 minutes trying to install it. It takes the control panel pages 20 or 30 seconds to load. It ground away for half an hour looking for a driver before it told me I had to authorize it to download one. I found and downloaded the driver myself twice but there is no way to cue win-doze to install from a download file without it going through its glacially slow search routine first.
Damn Monopolosoft, this is just evil. All evil at every turn. I think they do this kind of shit just to fuck with people, to rub their monopoly in our faces. A lot of fundies believe Bill Gates is the Antichrist. I disagree, I think he is Satan himself.

NHTSA to require backup cameras on all vehicles

Don’t have the time to look over the wording just yet, but I suspect that this is likely targeted towards vehicles like buses and box trucks. Most consumer-grade vehicles already have rear-view mirrors that would satisfy most common notions of “rear-view visibility”, but buses or large vans/trucks with no clear LoS to the rear have to resort to a lot of mounted mirrors that are cumbersome and don’t always provide the best view, especially in squirrely atmospheric conditions. In these cases a backup cam is a low-cost measure that can dramatically improve safety.

When I bought the Prius I insisted on having them install a backup cam (I got one of the lower badges that didn’t come with it standard, higher badges have it as part of the software package on the console) because the car’s unique backend has really terrible LoS issues. They basically took the rearview mirror and camera system out of one of Toyota’s pickups and put it in there. The system’s pretty robust, even has adaptive low-light mode so that it still works clearly at night.

I can see that, but that really wasn’t what Chambers was getting at. What he was pointing out was that people who did not do what they are accused of tend not to go on the attack and fling counter-accusations or try to destroy the person who made the accusation. They are more likely to focus upon their innocence.

One interesting situation to examine regarding such maxims is a that of a person who is not guilty of the thing they have been accused of doing but nevertheless wants to head off investigation that would likely reveal an wrong, unknown to the investigators, that the accused actually has committed.

I have wireless headphones, voice activation for my computer’s media stuff, I watch movies in HD, the search function works quickly and well, if I plug in my camera it imports my photos fine, but if I buy a new printer it basically is just prayer and sobbing as I reinstall the driver over and over and over.

re: #31 Kragar

I’m surprised that it took this long to require it as standard equipment. The price of digital cameras is negligible nowdays - parts and vehicle changes to accommodate new hardware would run about $100/vehicle, and the latest body designs, especially for trucks and SUV’s historically have severe ‘blind spot’ issues that these cameras would easily address.

41 lawhawk  Mar 31, 2014 11:37:09am

re: #34 GunstarGreen

It would apply to all vehicles with limited visibility when in reverse, including passenger cars, SUVs, and light trucks and buses under 10,000lbs.

Rear-view mirrors are insufficient to provide a clear view directly behind vehicles, especially those with a high trunk deck or obstructed rear view. The camera option is the best option to fulfill the rule with present technology.

The rationale for the rule is sound:

Our assessment of available safety data indicates that on average there are 292 fatalities and 18,000 injuries (3,000 of which we judge to be incapacitating2) resulting from backover crashes every year. Of those, 228 fatalities and 17,000 injures were attributed to backover crashes involving light vehicles (passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, and low-speed vehicles) with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,000 pounds or less.

In analyzing the data, we made several tentative findings. First, many of these incidents occur off public roadways, in areas such as driveways and parking lots and involve parents (or caregivers) accidentally backing over children. Second, children under five years of age represent approximately 44 percent of the fatalities, which we believe to be a uniquely high percentage for a particular crash mode. Third and finally, when pickups and multipurpose passenger vehicles strike a pedestrian in a backover crash, the incident is four times more likely to result in a fatality than if the striking vehicle were a passenger car.

My new car has a rear view camera. It is so cool that I can back up without having to twist my neck looking over my shoulder. Of course it is a hard habit to get out of.

Also: blind spot sensors on the driver & passenger side mirrors. My previous vehicle had an insert “blind spot mirror” but the sensors are even better!

This car has just about every toy on it, but not a dash cam (that I know of).

45 danarchy  Mar 31, 2014 11:39:40am

The thing with printers that drives me nuts is when they don’t provide a simple printer driver and you have to download a 300Mb suite of printer stuff. This especially sucks when you are just trying to install a driver on a terminal server or something and you don’t want to install the whole damn suite. You have to play all sorts of games to just extract the driver from the install package. Seriously, I just want to print, I don’t want you monitoring my toner level, or giving me some silly popup every time I print. I don’t want the fax and scanning software… just give me a basic damn driver.

re: #39 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

I also feel that every other aspect of computer technology has improved over the past twenty years except printers.

Here’s my theory.

Printers have the blessing/curse of not pushing very much data, really, compared to anything else. Even if you’re printing a full page full-color, you’re probably talking about single-digit megabytes of data per page. And given how fast printers are physically able to print, you can get away with very slow and stupid interfaces.

Compare and contrast with modern monitor interconnects, like HDMI or DVI. VGA just couldn’t push data fast enough to realistically handle more than, oh, 1024x768 at 60Hz. You need to come up with new interfaces, which radically and fundamentally break backwards-compatibility. Once you’ve broken the compatibility on the hardware level, you can throw away a lot of old crufty bullshit code, because the only peripherals that would use that code can’t plug in anyway.

If printers had been forced away from parallel ports in 1995 or so, because they just couldn’t keep up, I bet we’d be in some sort of magical fairyland paradise now. Imagine, if you will, a printer that just has an Ethernet jack on it. You send PDFs, always PDFs, to the printer, and it just spits out WYSIWYG. It can handle that because it’s got a phone microprocessor, or something, inside it. It doesn’t have the dreadful archaic internal architecture of the printers that curse us, even today, in 2014.

Just say no to parallel ports.

Provokatsiya!
Understanding Provocation

One of the most powerful tools the Kremlin has in its secret arsenal of Special War is provocation, what they call provokatsiya. While Moscow cannot claim to have invented this technique, which has existed as long as there have been secret services, there’s no doubt that Russians have perfected the art and taken it to a whole new level of sophistication and deviousness. At times, it can become a strategy all on its own (not always, mind you, with edifying results).

Provokatsiya simply means taking control of your enemies in secret and encouraging them to do things that discredit them and help you. You plant your own agents provocateurs and flip legitimate activists, turning them to your side. When you’re dealing with extremists to start with, getting them to do crazy, self-defeating things isn’t often difficult. In some cases, you simply create extremists and terrorists where they don’t exist. This is causing problems in order to solve them, and since the Tsarist period, Russian intelligence has been known to do just that.

I forget who it was, but one media theorist has the approach that all narratives, no matter how inconsistent-appearing, must actually be consistent in their own reality. So when Darrin changed to another person, well, that’s easy because that universe has actual magic. For a lot of narratives, where people just act fucking weird all the time, like horror movies, the explanation is these people are fundamentally different than us, that we are actually looking at an alternate universe, normally with much stupider people but often also people with ESP.

The movie Arlington Road, for example, doesn’t make any sense unless Tim Robbins character is telepathic and clairvoyant: his entire plan involves perfectly predicting Jeff Bridges’ actions and the time at which they’ll occur.

Sep 30, 1776: Washington blames militia for problems

Just as the British had discovered the difficulties of waging war with obstreperous Yankees for soldiers during the Seven Years’ War, Washington, the Virginia planter-cum-soldier, was unimpressed upon meeting his supposed army outside Boston upon his appointment as commander in chief of Continental forces in 1775. Just as the British had, he saw “stupidity” among the enlisted men, who were used to the easy familiarity of being commanded by neighbors in local militias with elected officers. Washington promptly insisted that the officers behave with decorum and the enlisted men with deference. Although he enjoyed some success with this original army, the New Englanders went home to their farms at the end of 1775, and Washington had to start fresh with new recruits in 1776.

Washington fought an uphill battle for military order until Friedrich, Freiherr von Steuben arrived at General Washington’s encampment at Valley Forge on February 23, 1778. The Prussian military officer commenced training soldiers in close-order drill, instilling new confidence and discipline in the demoralized Continental Army. Before von Steuben’s arrival, colonial American soldiers were notorious for their slovenly camp conditions. Von Steuben insisted on reorganization to establish basic hygiene, ordering that kitchens and latrines be put on opposite sides of the camp, with latrines facing a downhill slope. Just having latrines was a novelty to the Continental troops, who were accustomed to living in their own filth.

It says something when even The Patriot, the movie wingnuts like to fantasize as being the absolute truth when it came to the wonders of the militia against the redcoats, still had to acknowledge that militia broke and run when it actually had to meet more than a handful of enemy soldiers at once and scattered like roaches when cannons were involved.

They had neither bayonets nor the training to stand and fight. The only militia to stand and fight for more than two volleys was the 2nd line at Guildford Courthouse. Those militiamen, however, were mostly former Continental regulars from Virginia and Maryland who had been trained by Gen. von Steuben. They weren’t in regular uniform, but they retained sufficient bayonets and discipline to hold out longer.

Marco, that would be the separation of church and state you apparently don’t understand.

It is the belief of these types that the establishment clause does not preclude the government from passing laws who’s only basis is in the bible — only that the government cannot force you into a pew at gunpoint.

As myopic biblical literalists, they are also myopic constitutional literalists. They genuinely believe that it’s okay to make a de-facto state religion by way of making laws of all of its tenets, so long as there is not an actual law that plainly states “Christianity is the official state religion”.

Coincidentally, this is why hardcore religious fundamentalism should not be tolerated or coddled in the way that it has been up to this point. These people are enemies of freedom, and should be considered serious threats to the nation. Their problem with “Sharia Law” is not that it forces you to follow the whimsical decrees of a skydad, only that it is not the correct skydad. Calling them “The American Taliban” is not an exaggeration or a jest, it is simple fact.

Please take a leisurely look at our website - there is no charge. You’ll see we mean business.

To those who question the humorous tone of this website, let me say this. Consumption of tripe has fallen every year since 1958 and, according to our research, most people would rather eat a plastic bag than eat tripe. Drastic measures were called for. We have it on good advice that a humorous, self-deprecating tone is the way to sell tripe. It has worked for other foods and it can work for us.

Since we launched the campaign in 2012, the number of daily visits to this website has increased by 500% and we are now in double figures. Tripe is making a comeback.

We may not have the budget of our colleagues at the Potato Council or the National Beef Association but, thanks to a legacy from a recently deceased lover of tripe who wished to remain anonymous, we have been able to launch our new publishing arm, TMB Books. Find out what we have in store for you.

Tripe tastes just as good today as it always has. So why not take a look at our nutritious and delicious recipes - I’m confident you won’t be disappointed! There’s something for everyone on our website. So whether you’re 65 or 75, I hope you enjoy your visit half as much as we enjoy marketing tripe!

javascript:(function(){var a=(document.selection?document.selection.createRange().text:document.getSelection()).toString();alert(a.length?"Characters: "+a.length+"\nWords: "+a.replace(/\s{2,}/g," ").split(" ").length:"No text selected.")})();

I bashed this out today because I wanted to easily be able to see how many words were in a given article; I used to copy and paste the article into a new BBEdit window and see the count there, but this is much simpler - just select the text and click the bookmarklet.

How to prepare tripe

Nowadays, tripe is usually bought ready to cook but in the old days it was prepared in the following way. Please do not follow these instructions as it is not safe to drink bleach under any any circumstances whatsoever, even under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances.

1. Put the tripe in a washing machine on the non-whites heavy soiling cycle.
2. Add 2 bottles of industrial strength bleach. This will impart a lovely white colour and improve the flavour of the tripe. You may wish to reserve some of the bleach for use as a tasty sauce.
3. When the cycle is complete, remove the tripe from the washing machine and let it dry, preferably outside on a washing line. Please don’t worry about the birds. They won’t touch it.
4. When the tripe is dry, boil it for between 3-4 days. Please ensure all windows are kept open. You may wish to wear a sturdy pair of goggles.

No, but a fair and just distribution of income to the middle and working classes is what built America: it allowed them to buy American goods, educate their children and build a society in which more and more people are accepted and invited to play an active role.

Here’s that bookmarklet in a more readable form with indentation, before being minified. (You can’t drag this code to the bookmarks bar - use the one above for that.)

It’s very simple, actually - just gets the selected text (compatible with IE or everything else), then puts up an alert box showing the count. The only tricky part is the regular expression in line 9 - it replaces all runs of more than one whitespace character with just one space, so when it splits the text by spaces it doesn’t end up with blank words in the array.

(function() {
	var selected = (
		document.selection
		? document.selection.createRange().text
		: document.getSelection()
	).toString();
	alert(
		selected.length
		? 'Characters: ' + selected.length + '\nWords: ' + selected.replace(/\s{2,}/g,' ').split(' ').length
		: 'No text selected.'
	);
}());

SCOTUS disses Priests!

U.S. top court declines to hear new contraception cases

As a compromise, the administration agreed to an accommodation for non-profits affiliated with religious entities that was finalized in July 2013. But the various Catholic groups said the compromise process still violated their religious rights, prompting a new wave of litigation.

Courts across the country have granted the groups injunctions which prevent the administration from enforcing the mandate during the litigation.

The cases are Roman Catholic Archbishop of Washington v. Sebelius and Priests for Life v. U.S., U.S. Supreme Court, 13-891 and 13-829. (Reporting by Lawrence Hurley; Editing by Howard Goller and James Dalgleish)

This is the thing. If a woman didn’t want to do this, her child would never know. If the law compelled her to — no one would ever tell the child that it wasn’t her mother’s wish.

These are the things no one talks about. Children are given a rosey picture and never question what they were told.

Monetarily yes, but what chance would any GOP candidate have who openly defied them? You have 45% of the Senate, and a majority of the House who will not vote for, let alone propose, anything the NRA opposes. And the NRA itself has become more extreme in their demands.

In any sensible world, they’d end up overreaching and have their comeuppance, but I don’t see it happening.

Better would be rear-facing radar, that goes off and stops the car when a moving, child-sized thing sat directly behind you.
