Having been an elementary school teacher working with primarily ESL students (Spanish speaking), they worked hard to learn English. The fact is that it takes 4-7 years to learn the content language that is needed to perform well in school, particularly for those students who have not received education in their native language.

The best way to teach ESL students, and really any student, is through a true bilingual approach. That means that starting in first grade, the students all learn content material in all subjects in two languages. They are immersed one day in one language and then the next in the other language. They learn to think in both languages. Of course, that would never happen in the United States because we don’t believe in truly learning another language.
