The reporters are combining multiple years of pay if they had back pay actually compensated in the year - so it boosts their one-year salary far and above their actual base pay.

In those other years, the salary for these guys were zeroed out by the DOC while fighting to get these guys booted.

So it makes it look like the pay is well out of scale and is certainly headline grabbing. The reality is a bit more mundane, but the fact that these guys were able to find jobs in the prison industry is troubling - as is the fact that they can’t seem to get rid of them when they do wrong (looks like the prison equivalent to the teachers’ rubber rooms).
