A society where women and children would have gone to see the dogfights and then talked about it over tea = less depraved.

I really don’t get how that works in your head.

The Enlightenment was the birthplace of the idea of individual rights, individual liberty, and with it came a respect for ourselves as moral agents, the responsibility of ethics attendant on us, not on rule-following. With that came ethical questioning of many casually cruel things that used to be standard, and their amelioration.

It’s always weird when you pick up the anti-Enlightenment clubs, Cato. Do you notice the company you’re in when you do so?
