The concept (and it certainly is a sticky one) is a hold over from the period of Hasmonean period religious groups, including those who would eventually morph into what we call “Christians” of that time.

Christianity has always been strongly apocalyptic, probably because it was founded on these ideas.

And, for those in Judea who were living in the area in the 1st century, “the end” did come, in 70AD.

However, in the succeeding 19 centuries many people have found it in their interests to pretend the apocalyptic language wasn’t about the turmoil of that age (even though apparently Jesus explicitly told them it would all occur in his hearers’ own lifetimes.)

I did not know that.
