According to an exhibit I saw years ago at a local museum in Indiana, whiskey was often used as currency in southern Indiana/northern Kentucky in the 1800s (probably true across the region into Appalachia).
In Moscow in the early 90’s, vodka was as good as currency: universally tradeable, indefinite shelf life and stable in value when the currency was inflating over 6,000 percent annually…
