Actually, it makes him quite typical for the time. You should read on. If you get a chance and a library near you has his “Reds, Riots, and Race”, you should take a look at it (I own it.) He deserves far harsher epithets than “bigot lite”.

The larger point was that all choices were bad choices and would result in our suppression…Roosevelt already had a track record of it, so regardless of the infamous invitation of Booker T to the WH, Black voters were already soured on him, and plenty of people HATED Booker T’s Jim Crow accomodationism, anyway. The other alternative was the guy who would later tell us, after getting our vote, that Birth of A Nation is history written in lightning.

Not even a close choice. Haven’t read Reds, Riots, and Race. All I have from that era is “Race Riot in East St. Louis, 1917”. haven’t read it in 30 yrs.
