re: #674 Cato the Elder

Could you put that in English, please?

Sorry about that.

1. When I started in 1993, the department of architecture at Pratt had 2 computer labs with 30 computers, a handful of printers and 1 plotter. By the time I walked in 1999, there were 6 computer labs with over 200 computers and dozens of printers and plotters. (One license of AutoCad alone costs $3,000!) Computers may be great, but they cost much more to operate than drafting boards in a studio.

2. This is be an objective judgement on my part, but it seems to me that within the span of a couple of generations, college has become a home away from home rather than a slightly seedy yet comfortably worn-out facility. Today. with private dorm rooms, immaculately maintained landscaping, and all kinds of bells and whistles, colleges simply have much greater costs just keeping up with what students expect nowadays. (It’s not as though the teachers are making good money!)
