She went to a college for an MRS degree.

My father’s Polish-born family had real difficulty with the idea that my mother could have ideas on her own.

Those good old days remind me of a story she told me: She wanted to buy a car (her parents’ used Nash) but my mother and father, both junior enlisted, really didn’t have the money for it.

She said she would walk down to the bank in our hometown (about the size of the one my wife and I live in now). My father asked, “Don’t they need me to sign a note?”

Not that surprising if he was raised old-school: Until 1959, it was the law in Germany that a married woman needed her husband’s signature on any legal document, from a bank loan to an employment contract.

Until 1974, the German Constitution specifically stated that it was the woman’s job to tend to the household and family.
